Xantia TD thermostat

Does the cooling system really need to be drained to swap the thermostat ?

No. Did our ZX 1.9D just by undoing the thermostat housing and letting the water out. You will still have to bleed it. I simply tipped a gallon plastic antifreeze container full of water into the filler neck and then opened the valves. Surprisingly little leakage and I was able to pressurise the system by squeezing the container a bit.
