Super Rattle DW8

Unread post by xsaras4ever »

Hello to all from a very scorched Morbihan.

Re-visiting my Peugeot 306 with the DW8.

The previous owner was a "bodge the builder" but the body and interior are in nice condition.

I have fitted a replacement cyllnder head and injection pump. set the valves correctly and fitted a new timing belt kit.

It starts easily, no smoke, correct amount of power up and down the revs (ie: none coz it's a DW8)

However, it rattles like a pig and I see that the wires to the advance solenoid have been cut, flush to the solenoid and unfortunately I have dumped the old pump.

Guess I can't start to cure this rattle until I at least have a working solenoid ?

That sounds like a realistic conclusion, however in the meantime you could check the engine, gearbox and exhaust mountings! :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Thanks for the reply.....all those components are good.....it definitely is an internal engine noise, like banging valves but the valves and timing are spot-on.

If it runs well then the rattle is simply a result of the injection timing being just a little over-advanced. Maybe an error in setting the static pump timing.

If the timing solenoid is disconnected then the pump may be running on its default/fall-back/failsafe mechanical timing curve.

I'd be tempted to try to mechanically static time the pump by loosening the pump flange and rotating the pump and see if there's a point where the rattle has just ceased at a point just above idle and then when accelerating from idle up to mid-range.

If the pump is the correct replacement then ensure its dynamic timing is under ECU control. The solenoid you see disconnected could just be the cold start advance solenoid.

If the pump is not correct for the engine, the advance characteristic may be wrong and an over-advance rattle is thus likely. If this is the case then trying to find a compromise static timing setting as described above may help.

Thanks Jim.
I am inclined to agree with you about static timing.
In fact, I had been thinking of playing with the timing until I found several postings about the advance solenoid and diverted to that.
Will have a fiddle with the timing tomorrow when my battery is charged.
However......it might be my imagination (or too keen to make the solution fit) but I am sure I can see a "shadow" beside the three 13mm bolts on the cog on the pump, hinting that the timing is disturbed...
Better to start here for free before spending money on a solenoid.

Absolutely! Return the pump to those witness marks and see if anything changes... Don't for get to loosen and re-tighten the pipes to the injectors after adjustments to relieve any stress in them...

It's been a long while since ive been near a DW8 but from memory you cant adjust the injection pump (in the traditional way) as there are no elongated holes on the pump? I think the static timing is done by literally pinning the pump as you would when doing the timing belt, The pulley has elongated holes.

The advance solenoid fails fully one way (cant remember which) & it will rattle its head off if its disconnected.
I wouldnt waste any time till the solenoid is sorted, it literally just unscrews out & in the pump & can be replaced in situ no problem.

Yes. Correct about the cog, you undo the 3 bolts and adjust the timing there, directly on the cog. I wasn't going to mention it until I had actually done the job

Interesting about the solenoid.....seems like the only solution is to put everything right ....thought those solenoids are a nice chunky price.

Egg all over my face but I don't care coz nothing will wipe the grin off :rofl2:

Here is the evidence I was presented with.

1.) About 7cm of wires from the lower connector on the pump going nowhere....end cut off.
2.) Black covering grommet on advance solenoid...rectangle slot in grommet with nothing coming out of it.

I assumed that the wires had been snipped flush with the top of the solenoid.

So, I removed the air filter hard plastic pipe to gain access and popped off the grommet. Removed the little return diesel pipe from the solenoid and put a spanner on the solenoid. As the solenoid started to turn, a set of wires and intact connector began to appear. They had been hanging downwards out of sight from a 2nd slot in the grommet.
Put everything back together and she is sweet as a nut (we'll, that's relative....as it is a DW8)

Huge thanks to everyone and I am an idiot....but a very happy idiot today.

You are not the first person to make a silly mistake and feel like an idiot. You won’t be the last one, either. Personally, I’m encouraged to see that someone who seems to have good knowledge of the engine has made a mistake like this one.

And looking down the list of your ‘vehicles’, I see two Fordson tractors, as well as another two tractors. Whilst I’m not knowledgeable about tractors, one of my friends is mad keen on them generally, but specifically the Fordsons. I hesitate to say something that I’m not 100% sure about, and especially when I should know more than what I can remember. But, I think he has restored one Fordson, and is in the middle of restoring a second one. He might also have a working tractor as well. I hope I’m not making a big mess of what he owns and what he has restored, etc. But don’t ask me what models any of them are. I don’t have a clue.

If you have any pictures of your tractors that you are willing to share with me/us, (but probably not on this thread or this sub-forum, either(!)) I’m sure that my friend would love to see what Fordsons were available overseas, and especially in France. If you’re interested in tractors (you seem to be), and want to see his collection, I can ask him if he is willing to take pictures and let me share them with you.

He is nearly 80 years old and has retired from his farm. Other than the fact that his body is slowing down, he would like to still be working the farm.

I forgot. I’m a bit jealous about your Phase 2 406 Estate. You won’t mind sending it to me in Australia, will you? :-D
Cheers,
Andrew
