Super Rattle DW8

Hello to all from a very scorched Morbihan.

Re-visiting my Peugeot 306 with the DW8.

The previous owner was a "bodge the builder" but the body and interior are in nice condition.

I have fitted a replacement cyllnder head and injection pump. set the valves correctly and fitted a new timing belt kit.

It starts easily, no smoke, correct amount of power up and down the revs (ie: none coz it's a DW8)

However, it rattles like a pig and I see that the wires to the advance solenoid have been cut, flush to the solenoid and unfortunately I have dumped the old pump.

Guess I can't start to cure this rattle until I at least have a working solenoid ?

That sounds like a realistic conclusion, however in the meantime you could check the engine, gearbox and exhaust mountings!

Thanks for the reply.....all those components are good.....it definitely is an internal engine noise, like banging valves but the valves and timing are spot-on.

If it runs well then the rattle is simply a result of the injection timing being just a little over-advanced. Maybe an error in setting the static pump timing.

If the timing solenoid is disconnected then the pump may be running on its default/fall-back/failsafe mechanical timing curve.

I'd be tempted to try to mechanically static time the pump by loosening the pump flange and rotating the pump and see if there's a point where the rattle has just ceased at a point just above idle and then when accelerating from idle up to mid-range.

If the pump is the correct replacement then ensure its dynamic timing is under ECU control. The solenoid you see disconnected could just be the cold start advance solenoid.

If the pump is not correct for the engine, the advance characteristic may be wrong and an over-advance rattle is thus likely. If this is the case then trying to find a compromise static timing setting as described above may help.

I am inclined to agree with you about static timing.
In fact, I had been thinking of playing with the timing until I found several postings about the advance solenoid and diverted to that.
Will have a fiddle with the timing tomorrow when my battery is charged.
However......it might be my imagination (or too keen to make the solution fit) but I am sure I can see a "shadow" beside the three 13mm bolts on the cog on the pump, hinting that the timing is disturbed...
Better to start here for free before spending money on a solenoid.

Absolutely! Return the pump to those witness marks and see if anything changes... Don't for get to loosen and re-tighten the pipes to the injectors after adjustments to relieve any stress in them...
