Gosh! What a job to do those springs Richard Is there a special tool for the job?

I swapped the pollen filter in my Picasso yesterday. A very easy job via the access slot in the engine bay. One just needs to wear gloves and arm protection to avoid scratches from the sharp bits on the slot.

I remember swapping the pollen filter on your Picasso Jim, the day you collected it from the dealer. I did it, while you went in and did the paperwork, with a new filter provided by them. Easiest access I've ever come across for one of them!!

There's a special tool in my garage now, Jim! I suspect that if you have one of the compressors with the horseshoes on it with a single thread on the side, it would clear the spring pan, and on a lift would be straight forward to get it on the side and wind it in with a windy gun.

Good tip about Dettol Paul

I can not remember where I got it from but once paid a dealer to disinfect the air con and the smell after was identical to the Dettol stuff and not perfumed. Another time I used an aerosol that was set off in the car with it on recirculation and smelt of apples. For cars with the pollen filter under the scuttle, with the filter removed and the cabin blower on high to the central vents, I use the garden sprayer on a fine mist to spray it in where the filter was, turn off the blower and let it dry on the evaporator. It will drip out of the heater drain and help keep that clear. I use Dettol Antibacterial Multi Surface Cleaning Spray 750ml poured into the garden sprayer.

Paul, that's excellent Mine got well used yesterday and happily, no smells although I did detect a trace of 'new pollen filter' aroma for a short while!

As expected, drive shaft boot clip lasted <100 miles now has a jubilee clip on it.

Nox sensor (cheapish Ridex one from Autodoc) seems to be working - well, sending enough info to keep the computer happy as light has stayed off so far. No idea how it's actually performing for nox monitoring, I'll see if I can check in the computer some time

If it's this type of clip then not only should they be squeezed from either side, they should also be dimpled in on the top of the squeezed bit with a special tool.

A bit of rust proofing under the rear - which also showed that the rear exhaust mount is hanging on by a wing and a prayer - it's an ally mount and the salt has dissolved it. Bolts came out no problem however so replacement should be easy, and eBay turned up a replacement for £10!

I never got the hang of driving onto ramps, they always got pushed away and then I was unsure about driving off the end of them.

Richard, the amount of salt they use up your way must be immense. Bet you have no problem with slugs as a result!

The late Alan S used to advocate tieing a piece of old seatbelt to the slope and laying it along the floor, as the car is driven up the seatbelt stops the ramp slipping. I have no trouble with these - they are pretty heavy, and have a high rail at the back to stop you driving over, don't seem to have trouble with driving on them!

I used to use a bit of old carpet to stop them slipping away but eventually learned to do without.
Has been many years since the last time and I just thought, haven't seen the ramps for years and no idea where they could be.

My original set were, ahem, recycled, by the local tarmac gang Current ones are kept in the garage when not in use!

When I had my workshop in St Albans, I drilled 4 x 1/2inch holes into the concrete, 2 on either side. When I wanted to use the ramps I put 4 threaded rods into the holes and they were aligned with the back of the ramps keeping them in place. When not in use I put four bungs in the holes to stop them getting clogged with general dust.

Sadly SWMBO would not approve of holes in our drive so I now use a length of angle iron across the open garage door space resting on the walls and set the ramps against that. It also means that the end or the car I am working on is actually inside the garage so permits all weather operations!!
