Strange wiper problem

Unread post by Turfite »

Hi guys hope you are well,
I have 2009 citroen C5, the thing is my passenger side wiper sticks in the upright position when turned on, then returns to resting when I return to the car after a short while when I unlock the car.
I have checked the motor magnets etc on the passenger side and greased seem ok and was clean inside. The wiper motor works when the wiper is removed, I am at a loss guys. Could it be the drivers side motor.
I thank you all in advance

How old is the battery?
Have you tried doing a BSI reset? viewtopic.php?p=601679#p601679

Wiper failure on the C5 X7 is common, there is a long topic here to read viewtopic.php?t=59504&hilit=c5+wipers

Are you touching the wiper stalk after you remove the key, this is used to put the wipers in the upright position so they can be worked on. Should be something in the handbook.

Hi Turfite,
Here goes. The magnet sits on the shaft that comes out of the motor and has the worm gear on the end and drives the white plastic geared wheel.

For some reason, I think heat build up in the motor as the grease dries out, causes the magnet (red diamond and yellow line on the picture) to move a short distance along the shaft.

So what, you may say.

Well the magnet interacts with the circuit board inside the case and if the magnet has moved by only a small amount along the drive shaft, communication fails. The wiper system cannot locate the position of the wiper driven by that shaft. The wiper then hopefully parks either vertically or horizontally at the bottom of the windscreen to stop the other wiper colliding with it.

Of course the circuit board can fail if it has become damp, the magnet position is then not the issue.

If the circuit board looks ok, the fix is to lever the magnet back to the correct position along the drive shaft. Mine was very stiff, from memory the drive shaft had a series of small flats on it so was not perfectly round so you are moving the magnet in a plastic case along not round the drive shaft.

You will see some discussion of the best fixing means to "stick" the magnet on the shaft to prevent movement occurring again. Sealing and dryness of the motors is also important.

Similarly UK right hand drive C5 models drivers side motors are the master and both wipers fail if the issue is with the driver's side, then if the passenger side motor stops the driver's side will keep going and you still have very good vision in wet conditions.

If you can follow the forum descriptions to get the wipers going again you can save your self a considerable sum of money.

Hope that helps.
Andy.
