Is it best practice to remove the fuel filter housing to replace the filter?
The guy in this video removes it completely to clean it and, I guess, open it in an environment where nothing can fall in.
I know the older model required the fuel filter housing to be removed for replacement. But this seems like it could be done without removing the whole thing.
Thoughts?

Personally I would take it out to replace the cartridge. That gives you best access for thoroughly cleaning and fitting new O ring before reassembly. Also be sure to follow the guidelines once refitted to clear the air from the system.
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Do you just clean externally, or do you pour the fuel out and clean internally too?mickthemaverick wrote: 26 Jun 2026, 23:17 Personally I would take it out to replace the cartridge. Or just do what that guy did and clean externally and pop the new filter into the existing diesel.

I'd empty the fuel into a clean jug, take out the cartridge and wipe out the inside. Put the new cartridge in then refill with the jug.

Totally wrong and dangerous. It mixed filtered and unfiltered content. In the housing before the filter, impurities and possible water collect, the filter prevents it from passing further into the system. He mixed them in this way. After removing the filter cartridge, the contents must be thrown away and cleaned inside or best washed with water and then wiped with a clean cloth.

Do you replace the housing empty and let the car purge the system and fill it itself?Mihael_M wrote: 27 Jun 2026, 07:37 Totally wrong and dangerous. It mixed filtered and unfiltered content. After removing the filter cartridge, the contents must be thrown away and cleaned inside or best washed with water and then wiped with a clean cloth. The completion can be done in two ways. The first option is to put a new filter cartridge, gasket and connect everything (hoses and cable). then turn on the ignition without starting the engine. Then the low pressure fuel pump in the tank starts working for a short time and then stops. The procedure should be repeated, perhaps 10 times, and then start the engine. If it cannot start, repeat more times. Another way is to pour clean fuel into the filter housing, put the filter cartridge, gasket, mount the hoses, cables and then start the engine.
