Xsara 2.0hdi battery drain

Unread post by jopis8 »

Hi!
I'm new on forum, but with old problems :(

I have 2004 2.0hdi xsara 66kW.
Latest problem is battery drain.
I had engine overheat after long waiting while stuck on border pass. When i drive, coolant temperature is about 80°c, but when i was stuck on that border, i got redlight warning and temperatures above 100.
Soon as i got home, i found out that fuse was broken, first one from left side, big one, i think 50A, below bsm in engine bay. I replaced it with new one, cooling vent started working again.
When i was replacing that fuse, i got idea to controll all other fuses on car. And i have noticed that another one was broken, in small fuse/relay box just right by solenoid valve which controlls egr.
I replaced that one too (there is only 2 of fuses, and 2 green relays).
But there i noticed that when i shutdown engine, that solenoid stays running for some time, so i suspect that there is my problem of battery draining. Sometimes it stops after few minutes, sometimes it takes longer to that solenoid stop working. And something else, do anyone here has connection diagram for that solenoid? Upper 2 pipes are connected, one on vacuum pump, second on egr valve, but bottom pipe is free. And when i press my finger onto it to close air sucking on it, solenoid turns off. So my question is, is it possible that solenoid kills battery in one night if it stays too long 'open' trying to shutoff, or i should look on 3 green relays of ac/cooling vent on radiator, because 2 electrians told me that if battery drain started after i change that fuse of radiator vent, there should be something with drain.... But my concern is still that why is down pipe on solenoid without any connection or something like some sort of plug on the end of it.
And yeah, my new battery is messed up after just day and a half in car with that ammount of drain (i put brand new 75ah 700A battery, tryed to drive 30mins, parked and didnt drive for a day and half). After it drained yesterday, i charged in on proffessional charger and picked it up today, tester said battery charged on 100%, on 12.5V, but it has only 370A power on tester :!: . Do i have to replace new battery again?
My second concern is xsara's typical fault - high beam position on indicator/lights handle behind wheel. When i switch to high beam, they shut off after few seconds back to low beam. If i put little pressure from myself onto handle, then they stay on high beam, but not always. Same thing is sometimes when i get in car, put key in ignition position, lights get on without i touched handle to turn lights on. I thaught that there is drain cause, but then i would see that lights got on when night goes on, car is below my window, i see it all night.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the column switch has got contaminated or even broken, I'd suggest you consider replacing the unit. :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

I think i found suspect for drain.
I've spent whole day, disconnecting relays and fuses, searching for drain cause.
After whole day, just before dark, i found out that my mehanic connected BLACK wire from + on battery onto bsm module, and RED wire which comes from main power cables from engine bay onto bsm's black connector.
After i unscrewed that 8mm nut and pulled out red cable, my + lead on battery dont make sparks anymore when i reconnect it. So, 99% that there is battery drain cause, but now queston is, where the hell goes that red wire??? Does anyone here has similar car (2004 xsara) with same bsm type, to take a picture so i can see where those cables must go? Only pictures on web are those of bsm's for sale, with wires being cutted or disconnected. My concern is only that red one with round plain washer ending, where the hell it goes, if not on that 8mm threaded rod where is black one + from battery connected?
It's dark now, and i have no conditions for further investigation, and i need picture of properly connected bsm so i can continue tommorrow morning.
Tnx.

Anyone?
Does anyone has access to electric scheme of this exact combo so i can have info where the hell this red wire goes?
It's supposed to be + and to be attached together with that live + black below on picture which goes directly from battery, but in my case, back in few days, that red wire is - out of sudden (wth).
So i need wiring diagram of combo with that red wire (all i found on internet is without it) so i can found where the other end of it is attached so i can found cause of my problems.
Tnx.

If you look the bundle of wires you'll see that they all have identification codes printed on them. Does this thick red wire have a code printed on it? If it doesn't then it's more than likely to be something a previous owner has fitted. Colour of wires is absolutely no clue as to its function.

It has but is blured. I would say BB3 but i'll scrap tomorrow more insulation arround it to try to find non blured code. It goes in same bundle with bb5a red thick wire.
I've just found some wirind diagram on internet, and they both are supposed to be + on preheat control unit, bb3 on it from battery, bb5 (mine is bb5a...), goes from preheat control unit onto 3 relays at the radiator, for powering radiator vent.

My car has some serious issues.
I bought another car for parts because i didnt want to spend more money on buying and trying whats wrong.
Car2 is 10months older than mine, and it's a estate, my xsara is standard 5dr.
I've bought it so i can switch EVERYTHING what's wrong with my car. BUT....
My first problem was engine bay installation, so i switched it. But then i discovered (first) difference, my car has 4pin connector for glowplugs on its engine bay wires, car2 has one wire directly connected to first glowplug with small nut. So, i switched whole set of wires, and that one too. After that, car started, but i have p1352, p1351, and some more fault codes. But, p1352 doesnt go away after i delete it in diagnostic laptop.
I have more problems, ac wont start=engine ventilator also, car runs but temps are very high (didnt let him in 90+ i'm scared of overheating). But if i start manualy radiator vent from diagnostics, it works. If i pull out green connector below thermostat (from thermoswitch if thats its name), ventilator starts spinning regulary after few seconds from disconnecting that green connector (i'm avare that is mode for protection of engine if some components which regulate engine cooling are failing). So i go back to diagnostics, i have p0480, p0481 (my car is with one radiator vent).
So, i spent last 2 weeks, replacing EVERYTHING from car2, on my car. Important thing is that all that stuff is and was working on car2 before i pulled it out and mounted on my car. But, again, on my car, something isnt working properly in that combo, because my ac compressor wont start, and together with him, radiator vent wont start.
Then i replaced whole wiring from car2 on my car, wires, connectors and relays related and connected to radiator fan. Fan and ac compr. were in same state, not working automatically, only if i started it in diagnosis lap.
So i tried to switch literally everything, ecu, bsm.... But my car wont start, it just keeps starting (starter works normally when i try to start engine), but wont start. And after few seconds i got unrecognized key fob message on instrument table. I switched little black 'cap' (keyfob code reader on ignition switch), ecu, bsm, i didnt switch only ignition switch (does he has some connection with key code?) I'm going slightly mad with this car. I switched com2000 from car2, it's working normally on my car, i switched cabin fan, it's working normally, but how in the hell is possible if i switch EVERY single component related for car (ecu, bsm, code reader...) and car wont start. In some crazy combo (my ecu, car2 bsm, my key+my code reader), car started, and ac and radiator fan started working. But when i put back all plastic parts, radiator grill holders, and everything else in engine bay, ac and fan stopped working. Installation is from car2, where it worked flawlessly. My concern is that i have permanent error code in diagnostics related to ac control module (something like that, i'm done in workshop for today). So, i replaced little black ac control module on passenger side left of cabin fan, replaced ac controls below radio, even replaced cabin fan. Fan is working normally, regulation of power works normally, but ac wont start and permanent error related to ac control module stays in diagnostics after deletion....
And my car is in limp mode because some of those errors.

I have no more ideas.
