why do I need an ultra violet light?

To check your banknotes and avoid passing or custody-of offences which can get you 10 years in jail. Before the 1981 act it was quaintly called utterance as in .... "The defendant uttered a dodgy fiver in ye olde Waitrose m'lud and we caught him bang to rights."

My inspection lamp has just died. I feel the need for a trip to Lidl now... Wonder if our local one have any left in stock... Only one way to find out I guess...

I braved the legendary third aisle yesterday and now have one :-D

It's seriously good considering it only cost a tenner :)

Well, my (admittedly) less than scientific tests suggest you can't... Unless all my fivers, tenners and twenties are all fake...

I guess the UV light is of the wrong wavelength...

This is from the Bank of England bank note check info

A UV lamp which emits light at around 365 nanometres is ideal for checking the fluorescent features on all our notes.
Ultraviolet numbers
Under a good-quality ultraviolet light, the value
appears in bright red and green on the front of the
notes, against a duller background.
