Tyre wear

Unread post by moizeau »

Just fiited a new abs sensor ready for the CT this week and noticed some strange tyre wear. The tyres are dated 28th week of 2021 and the pressures are fine. They were tracked a couple of thousand miles ago and hardly moves. It's likely to do 300 miles in a day then sit for 2 months.

Right hand front cracking/splits on outside edge

LH front, same but on the inside

What causes this, never seen it before?
Cheers

Since the wear is on the left side of each tyre looking forward I would think you may have a rough surface right hand turn that you negotiate regularly ? Just a thought. That is a more familiar sight in Milton Keynes with its multiple roundabouts but as you drive on the wrong right side of the road excessive roundabouts would cause the opposite edges to undergo the stress and possibly crack. :)

What make of tyres are they ?

When the tracking was done, if they adjusted it on just one side it might not be set right. You could see if the number of threads showing to the track rod ends are the same on each side.

If the old tyres did not wear like this before the tracking was done then it could suggest the tracking is now not right.

I would have expected both tyres to wear on the inside OR outside if it was tracking. These have both worn on the RHS. I'll know if it's tracking on Thursday because the check that for the CT also I can compare to results to the last time it went in.
As Mick mentioned, it may be a left hand turn / island but this car normally sits in a straight line.
The tyres are Nexan, had several sets now and got them on my van aswell.

I had a 2.0hdi C5, mk1, I used to get 10,000 ish miles out of a pair of fronts.
Even though the tyres were a "recommended fit", the sidewalls were not strong enough to cope with my enthusiasm going round roundabouts, when the pressures were a little low.
They lasted longer as soon as I went back to Michelins

I tried all sorts and never got more that 6,000 miles from the fronts. The rear tyres lasted forever, or would have but were swapped to the front now and then.

I ran my Mk1 2.2 on Goodyear NCT's and got 12-13k out of fronts and 20+ on the back. They are my all round tyre of choice but not always available!! :)

As the outer edge of the tyres was wearing more that the rest, my theory was that the sidewalls were collapsing under the weight of a 2.0 hdi engine

Failed the MOT on the tyres, new bloke, same place. Seems a muppet. I asked about the strange tyre wear and possible cause, he told me it was due to the age of the tyre, when I told him they date 1/2 way through 2021 he shut up and became a little abrupt. He never mentioned that on the advisories it was noted a liitle play in the wishbones and things that connect to them. My mate has a lift, retired mech. he's on holiday next week but shortly after that we''l find the reason.
