Might be a placebo, but given it was free (my father in law has changed cars and no longer has a diesel, so was "clearing out the garage") this stuff has gone in the Grey 308's tank this morning.

Interesting to see if it makes any difference to the dpf. Our 308 1.5 hdi passed the MOT last month but I noticed the emissions were higher than last year at 0.74 so possibly it might have been close to a fail with a 0.7 limit. A few weeks earlier it gave a dpf warning but after driving in 3rd gear for some time it has not appeared again.

Check the tailpipe Paul, if it's sooty the DPF is bust. 1.5s like to break them for some reason....

Thank you. Just checked and the tail pipe is covered in soot so a new dpf is needed for possibly the next MOT. It was serviced at the MOT as well and nothing was said. I had noticed a couple of times when accelerating hard a plume of soot out the back so maybe that was the dpf. It is only on 23000 miles so they do not last long.

A look on autodoc and dpfs start around £600 and then a diagnostic would be needed to tell the car it had been replaced. Maybe we should start looking at replacing the car whilst petrol ones are still able to be sold, we do not need a diesel any more as our mileages are not much these days. Also found the Skoda Octavia petrol gives mpg as good as the 308 diesel.

That's annoying Paul.... I don't know why they break, maybe the software has been tweaked to delay regen, or they have cheaped out on the DPF substrate, but it does appear to be an issue on the 1.5s whereas it wasn't on earlier 1.6s (unless they were abused....!). I wouldn't buy anything with the 1.2 PSA engine, but the 1.4 VAG seems to be OK in later guises.

Sorry, Matt, hijacked your blog!?!

:)
I ordered a set of Brembo pads from Craparts4less on ebay at 5.20pm last night. I was perplexed when I received a delivery notification at 12.47 this lunchtime. Turns out it was the brake pads arriving. The ebay status still shows as 'Awaiting dispatch' :? I'm normally used to waiting a few days for Craparts4less/Eurocraparts to deliver so I don't know what went wrong on this occasion

No problem at all! A good meander is fine by me

Interesting about the 1.5 Vs 1.6 DPF lifespan!

No error messages from the Grey 308 today on its 42 mile round trip to the office and back for Sarah. Unsurprisingly the brakes making a bit of noise. Hopefully I don't suffer an instance of EuroWrongParts and can get that issue resolved this coming weekend :)

Grey 308 SW - still seems happy enough with a dose of the Redex DPF Cleaner. Brake pads picked up from EuroCarParts Wigan last night.

Blue 308 SW - Filled up: Tesco, Wigan
528 miles covered,
£71.77, 173.9 ppl, =41.27 litres = 9.08 gallons

58.2 mpg :)

A few pictures, still on with this task
  • wind back tool modified/ made less universal as too thick to get it in place
Two pins driven out of the tool's head:

Allowed it's minimum position to change from approximately here

To here:

The little cross bar on the tool gave insufficient leverage, to 19mm socket and breaker bar, plus long screwdriver through caliper to steady it, let me drive the piston around and back in.
