Another C5 X7 SMEG+IV2 Upgrade + Questions

Unread post by richardmayer »

Hello,

I started a little project and upgraded the RT6 in my C5 X7 2012 to a SMEG+IV2-Unit.
I only have access to "Offline DiagBox", so I did the configuration the hard way, by editing the Database-Files in the Head-Unit.
The VIN could be changed using the RNEG2-Menu in DiagBox.
The Unit and display were from a DS3, so I had to modify some of the options and variables.
As I did not want to pay 120€+ Euros for the little plastic-cover in front of the Head-Unit, I modeled it with a 3D-Printer and it also houses the additional "Menu", "Vol+" and "Vol-" Buttons, which are wired directly to the Quadlock-Plug (see Photo). To cut a long story short: Nearly all the functions work (Camera, PDC, CarPlay, Radio) so it's perfectly usable.

But there are two nice-to-have features, that are not working yet.
Maybe some of you who already did the conversion can help me out.

- The verhicle-settings (like Rear-Wiper, Coming-Home-Light) are being properly shown in the SMEG-Unit, but I cannot save them from there (see photo). They seem to be "Read-Only".

- I did not manage to activate the pop-up Menus für "door-open" and such (see photo attached how it "could" look like). It this even configured in the SMEG-Unit, or somewhere else via Diagbox?

I know, this is quite "niche" but maybe somebody is into this.
Also to make it easier, if somebody might be able to send me the original or working config_options and up_config Files from a C5 X7 I'd be very happy an might be able to compare.
If anybody is interested in the 3D-Model of the covery I'd be happy to share it - I'm sure it can be printed much nicer with a better 3D-Printer (mine is quite old and a cheap one).

Best Regards
Richard

Can't help with your problem, sorry, but I must congratulate you on your upgrade. I presume that you have not worried about the loss of the CD player? Is your USB socket still under the centre armrest?

No, did not use the CD-Player anyway and using CarPlay is much better than juggling CDs. :)
The USB-Plug of the RT6 was compatible to the SMEG-Unit, so I was able to just keep the USB-Plug in the armrest.
Thought about placing a USB-Port in the new cover because reaching the USB-Plug in the armrest while driving is "challenging", but decided to keep it in the original place.
There is a AAWireless Wireless CarPlay Adapter in the Armrest now.

Fantastic work here, well done.
I'm very interested in potentially doing this upgrade myself.
Have you seen Remy's video on YouTube about this (posted in the last week or so)? Not sure if that answers your questions?

I like CD's so an interested to understand if there's a way to retain functionality on that, via autochanger.

Ah, thanks - that was a great hint. I didn't know the video - would have saved some time... :)
So to be able to change the BSI-Values from the SMEG, one would have to upgrade the BSI to a later version of the C5 X7 BSI (I guess 2014 or 2015).
As I'm not a professional and don't want to brick my car messing around with the BSI, I think I'll just leave it that way now.
The options can still be edited from the instrument-Cluster menu.

BTW: I did not do the display-wiring manually like in the video but got one of those SMEG-Adapters:
Screenshot 2025-11-24 at 14.21.29.png
It's a tight fit with the additional Quadlock-Connector, but fits behind the unit.

As for the CD-Changer: There is an Option in den SMEG-Database-Files config_option.sqlite to enable the CD-Changer: "SW_OPTION_CDC" which can be set from 0 to 1.
But as I do not have a Changer or the wiring for one, I have not tried it.

In the official PDF-Document for the SMEG+, there is also a Documentation of the Pin-Out for the CD-Changer:

I'm not sure, if it's the same PIN-Out for the IV2, but I'd say it's pretty probable.

I made some changes to the setup this weekend and replaced the Head-Unit for a different one (Niveau F2 with integrated Sat Nav and DAB).
I reused the config of my prior Head Unit (Niveau B2) and everything is working, but there is one thing:
When using CarPlay, with this unit, in the lower section a little bit of the screen is cut off:
IMG_7461.jpeg
This has not been the case with my other SMEG+IV2-Units.
I upgraded from 6.3 to 6.4, but nothing changed.
Is anybody using CarPlay on an original 2015-2017 C5 X7?
Is this normal behaviour, or can it be fixed by some parameter?

Best Regards

I think you've gone further with this upgrade than I've seen anyone else post up on here so far - but would definitely be interested to see if others have done similar.

I could be wrong but I think I can see a slight amount of cropping at the top and a very slight amount of cropping on the right.

Thanks for the replies.
The strange thing is that the cropping only seems to apply to the CarPlay screen.
The rest of the GUI seems to be fine (general GUI and AVR Picture from the cam).

I‘ll see if I find a solution and post if I do.

Greetings and congratulations - amazing work!
I am seriously preparing for the same swap for my C5 X7 Cross Tourer Exclusive + from Jan 2015. So about the head unit variants I understand that the Niv. (Niveau) is equipment level (DAB, Sat Nav, etc...) going from A1 (lowest), A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, F1, F2, N1 to N2 (highest). Is it worth the F2? I am looking at a cheap offer from DS3 also which is Niv. C1. Is it necessarily for the code to be 9815355380 and more over from any model equipped with SMEG + IV2?
I get that the display does not matter at all as long as it was fitted in car with the SMEG + IV2.
About the DiagBox config - since yours was from DS3 I guess at first the UI show the model of the DS3 (when parking and in settings menu) but your image shows the C5 model. How did you manage to do it? Can you please share your config file and more info how did you do it offline and is worth to pay the online version? I mainly care about the CarPlay and really would not bother if some features would become read only - they are not for everyday use and I can easily bring the laptop and change them via the DiagBox if needed.

Kind regards,

Remis video (I mentioned it earlier but didn't link it) is here, incidentally.

Yes - Hardware-wise, there is nothing to add to the Video.
As for the configuration without paid DiagBox Account, I started with this Thread:

https://www.mittns.de/thread/55-smeg-sm ... 2-hacking/

Its german, but in short you have to edit some sqlite-Files and modify them to fit your C5.
If you have a Internet via Bluetooth enabled device, you can do that with an android phone.
I had to solder a serial Adapter to the SMEG+ Mainboard, because Internet was disabled.
If you are Linux/Unix familiar, it should be no problem, but anyway some work...

Hi, I found this thread and I also bought the SMEG IV 2 unit from a DS3. I managed to code the VIN using Diagbox but that's it.

The image is upside down and the menu button doesn't work, so I can't pair anything. I've tried to update the firmware but I can't because my VIN number isn't supported.

So do you mind if I ask what variables you changed? Thanks in advance
