So one side brake pad caliper housing bolts were finger tight ! 😲.... photos explain things. Both front and and back are all done , the front pads have bedded in nicely and the braking is uniformed .

Indeed yes and if I had a pound for every one of those I've had I'd be quite wealthy....

Eek!

When the green 306 HDi first came into our possession (after a test ride= fine! And about an hour's drive home = fine!) it went into service as Sarah's daily transport for her short commute (about 5 miles each way) a relatively new driver at the time it was somewhat of a culture shock versus her brother's Chevrolet Kalos 1 litre, but in typical fashion she took it in her stride....

... Until the fourth day of use when it quite literally ground to a halt. As it turned out, all four front caliper mounting bolts were loose, so loose in fact that a couple had left and allowed the caliper to rotate a fraction and wedge itself against inside of the rim!

A short while later I had opportunity to look at it's rear brakes. In defence of whoever had "fixed" it brakes (presumably at some point not long before we bought it), they had not left all those loose too!
Spoiler: show
oh no, there were 3 out of 4 loose!
Spoiler: show
the fourth one, cross threaded and very tight!

Blimey matt that was a close one my friend, now people in this situation will understand that need to get the car on the stands and a tinker time , its not for no reason it for prevention

I have to agree about prevention. After I renewed all the suspension and brakes all round on the Legacy I felt a real sense of satisfaction knowing the car was as good as it can be! :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

So true Mick , and that feeling is a very powerful one as well, a few months ago I did the full timing belt kit on my 308cc finding a weeping water pump was one of them moments.

Yes, definitely a close one.

Then buying a car, I'd not normal think "are the brakes actually attached to the car?" Would need to be added to the checklist, by hey ho!

Definitely more comfortable with any "new to me" car once I've had a proper crawl all over it :)

Same as me matt it's the best way to learn the car and trust it , I started doing this years ago and I will always carry on . You do the same and keep up what you do , especially having children too

And there in a nutshell is why I don't really trust anyone else to work on my cars. I know if I do it myself there's a good chance it's done properly...
