after some other work removing the wiper mechanism but not removing the cables, installed it back and the next day the wipers and front headlights were coming on by themselves.
today I took off the cowling and wipers to check the wiring, and while the fault was present I unplugged the wiper motor, of course they stopped but headlights still on, so that fault was coming from the wiper motor circuit.
have stripped the wiring back to where it goes through a grommet into engine bay and its all good, dry and not chaffed.
I have got out the engine fuse board [its a 9661708280 board], disconnected battery and unplugged all the connectors, no greeny bits [corrosion] on any of the pins or in the plugs, the board underneath has Maxi fuses in it, I removed each and cleaned contacts, there was a drip or two out of there but I blew it out with airline but there was no water in bottom of fuse box.
