Berlingo electrical gremlins

Hi everyone, I’ve got a 2014 Berlingo 625 Enterprise HDi 75 and it’s got some proper electrical weirdness.

Horn: The horn doesn’t work at all when I press it (engine on or off). But sometimes with the key out it will randomly beep a few times. In heavy rain it even went off solid for about a minute, so I pulled the horn fuse.

Central locking / fob: If the van’s been locked for a while, the key fob sometimes won’t unlock it. If I unlock it with the key in the door, the fob then starts working again.

There’s a buzzing/vibrating coming from the passenger headlight.
The strange part is the lights don’t even need to be on, it buzzes as soon as the headlight is plugged in (ignition on / engine running). If I unplug the passenger headlight connector, the buzzing stops instantly. Plug it back in and it starts again straight away. I can also see some grime/possible moisture inside the headlamp.

I plugged a scanner in and it shows:
• F5FF – BSI unexpected re-initialisation
• A4C5 – third brake light fault
• F40A – oil gauge fault

I’m guessing the headlight issue (maybe water ingress / bad connector / levelling motor?) could be causing the BSI to freak out and then that’s messing with the fob and horn.

Any ideas where to look first or common faults on these?

Ignore the oil gauge fault, it's completely bogus.

The unexpected reinitialisation fault is probably disconnecting the battery without following Citroen's ridiculous pantomime.

Try changing the battery in the key fob. Also, the shells on these are poor quality and break frequently. If somoene has replaced that with an eBay special, the battery contacts in those can be poor.

Horn is most likely a traditional electrical fault somewhere. Same with the brake light.

Headlight sounds like the levelling motor/linkage is seized or jammed.



You have several faults - don't try and overthink it into being a single complicated one.

You know what you’re right, I think I’ve been overthinking this by a mile.
Van over all is in a very good shape with 130k miles on, and to be honest was in two minds here, whether to get rid of it or keep it.
Yeah I think key fob is not original and looks like a cheap casing as well, so that would make sense.
I’ll have to look into this horn situation, without it the van will not pass the mot.
Might be a stupid question, but do 2013/14 berlingos even come with headlights levelling motor? Thought headlights would be adjustable manually.

I live in Cardiff area and phoned up few people here but most conversations been absolutely useless by being told it’s a major wiring fault, BSI and BSM need to be replaced etc etc, or some of these specialists want to charge Ferrari prices

Look to the right of the steering wheel and down and bit. Is there a little control on the dashboard with 0 1 2 3 numbers on? Yes, you have headlight levelling. I have it on a 2011, bearing in mind they are vans and carry heavy stuff often, I'd expect it's there on most.

These are NOT major BSI/BCM type faults. If anyone pulls that, it's shorthand for "I haven't got a f**king clue about electrics, please let me go back to changing brake pads."

Have a rummage on berlingo forum - I remember seeing some horn-not-working faults discussed on there.

Ok cool, that makes so much more sense then.
Looks like a new headlight is needed then.
And yes that’s exactly what I was thinking after these Citroen experts in a Cardiff told me major wiring problem under the glow box and headlight wiring and connections need to be ripped out to find out the cause of buzzing noise….and few more up here wanted to charge £144 just to have a look at it.
So it’s not as bad as I thought then…I might just keep this little van.
Just need to figure out why the horn don’t work properly and possibly look into genuine key fob as well
