My €20 5270VP/9684402480 Fix
Hi everyone,
*DISCLAIMER - THIS PIPE ISN'T TECHNICALLY ROADWORTHY DUE TO ITS SHAPE AND I STILL NEED TO RELIABLY LATHE A FLARING TOOL DIE*
Finding info and those willing to share info about this nightmare hydraulic pipe fitted to the back of these 4-Cyl C5 X7s and C6s has been tough. Finally I have manged to get hold of sleepers to lift the car, 3.5mm CX pipe and a double flaring kit. As of last night I spent €20 on pipe and the car is RAISED. A €170 saving from dealer.
This isn't a long enough piece of pipe and is in the wrong shape, as such I will need to replace it, for now though, the car is raised at a bargain price and with the right pipe it was an easy enough job that this idiot can do it!
Thanks to KennyW for sharing images of the pipe. A big thanks to Mr Dolphin in Dublin for selling me a length of this pipe!! He doesn't normally sell it so I appreciate the time!
I Used:
- 3.5mm CuNiFer pipe (CX)
- My old fittings and O-Rings
- Double Flare Kit
- 3D printed bending tool I made
- Sleepers, M20 bar and bolts and washers, jack to raise car
I need:
- At least a metre of pipe to make a proper shaped pipe
- To get on the lathe and make a special die for the pipe
- Maybe include a flexi but in the middle, or a coil
Removal:
1. With the car self-depressurised and sad I raised the back using scissor jacks and used my sleeper system under
2. Attached a battery and depressed the entire hydraulic system
3. Using a blowtorch I heated and vice-gripped the collets undone
Make a new pipe
1. Cut ends of old 5270VP
2. Remove (some force required) O-Rings, plastic spacer seal and metal collet
3. Use the conical part of the double flare tool to match flare dimensions to 5270 VP, refitting each item the correct way round.
Fit Pipe
1. Bend pipe to fit, screw up unions, realise only one will screw into the sphere block
2. Cry and ruin the pipe by bending it again in-situ
3. Tighten up unions
Re-Pressurise
1. Top-up LDS
2. Pressurise Reservoir with 1-Bar
3. Start engine selct high, wait for hiss (none came)
4. Bleed (left right left right up down up down and all that)
5. Send it down the road over the biggest bumps you can find - what's honestly the worst it can do to me now?
Any Questions welcome, getting information about this pipe is like blood out of a stone with some people and internet and ChatGPT is no help!! This isn't a good solution yet but I plan to make it better, manufacture a proper flare tool and make it roadworthy. Even so, The car has been up and down the road and lanes and has been thoughly crashed about to attempt to discover a leak. None has occured yet. This is to move it out the way of another car that needs to come out and to prove it can be done for not a lot by the likes of me!!

Haha yes very true but it won't pass a roadworthiness test sadly!

They're strict but no I would expect the same for MOT. As you can see, while the pipe is secure it isn't in any of the OEM fasteners and it's close to the exhaust, which could cause heating if left too long stopped in traffic for example. While I have left it running for ages and it isn't even warm, a tester may not see it this way!

paint it spray black and drive into a few muddy water puddles, MOT guy will 99% overlook. (he will have no clue what he is looking at anyway)

Re: My €20 5270VP/9684402480 Fix
This could work out if you reroute the pipe and add a few coils in to allow it to flex.
I did a similar temporary fix to the same pipe 2 years ago but I didn't reform the ends, I just joined two existing ends to a length of copper pipe but I made it long enough to go through all the pipe routing clips and formed 2-3 coils to allow for the flex. The original pipe has a rubber flex section for that. My temporary fix is still in place but yea I'd like to change it at some stage.
Good work though, I'd be interested to see details/ drawing if you have it of how you made those ends.

And coils - yes I know but the whole problem as per my first post as there simply isn't enough pipe there!

Well done on getting this sorted - especially if you made your own tooling as well. As others have said, interested to see what you did there.

Will make a more detailed guide on tooling, dimensions and what not if enough interest.wurlycorner wrote: 22 Jun 2025, 20:12 Well done on getting this sorted - especially if you made your own tooling as well. As others have said, interested to see what you did there.
Saying that don't want to tread on any toes. I believe others like Jay have worked really hard and are skilled engineers who have made proper and safe solutions and probably don't want to undercut by some cheap vernier-gauge wielding early 20s lad who bought some pipe, had three coffees and decided that today was the day

Hi,
If anyone needs to repair or replace this in a similar way but doesn't have access to tools or the necessary skills, I recommend these solutions:

That was my original plan but be warned will not ship to UK or IE. Otherwise that would have been my perfect solution
