I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Not sure if this will help at all, it's nearest I've got in Haynes. Note this is the later (green, 1999-2002) Haynes, correct diagram likely to be in the early (red) 406 Manual.
It's also XU not XUD specifically. Edit, legend would help!

Re: 1998 406 1.9TD cooling fan wiring diagram?
Thanks again folks, none of the above appear to match what we have although the first (DW10 with single fan!) appears the closest so far. The dual fan diagram/sans AC (page 1 of the second PDF) appears to use the old-style 3-pin fan switch which this car doesn't have.
I will have a peruse of the remaining pages but to be honest I think we're closer to the first diagram as regards functionality, either way I've since re-researched the Bitron threads and it would seem the actual Bitron was only the issue in one case where it had loose parts inside. (and the bulk of the Xantia ones were related to the relay's exposed location whereas our one is tucked safely inside the "ECU" box) Most "possessed fan" problems have been rooted down to wiring/connection issues in parts of the loom close to connectors & given the general condition of the car I think the best option for now at least is test & locate the bad wire/s and overlay new (either that or don't touch the horn while it's not running & see if it develops further!)
