Hmmmm, wondering if I should have bought a "clutch pedal clip" at the same time.

Yes get one, these do fail , i can't remember what car I did ages ago but this little part failed after I'd done everything else that part makes a difference and can cause problems when they wear

Any leakage ? That's one sign , these cylinders seals give and your have a give away sign of fluid, and a bit later on the reservoir bowl will have a slight drop (if your eagle eyed your notice it)

Interesting thought that little clip , now ive seen somewhere when the clip fails it take a bit of time , a few weeks , your have a click one time when using the clutch your think nothing then a week or more after the cylinder (pedal end) will fail because its plunger will have been worked off set which then damages the seal then air gets into the system , then the last bit , pedal hits the floor and won't return , just before that your have the pedal feeling like its lost half of its pressure and like mine I was using my foot to pull it back up to work , then a while after, say 3 weeks it will fail, the gear box end the clutch fork arm , which used to be powered by a cable on lots of cars years ago , has always been know to last longer then the pedal end , say you did the full clutch kit but left the pedal then , pedal , but if it was all completely done then you know the answer, I'd say if the car doe a fair bit of towing it might be worth checking out the prices of clutches made for the job . Hope my jumble makes sense
Husky.

Good jumble Husky, I follow your reasoning.
A few quick images from progress this morning. Weather has been kind to me (nowt like what forecast!!)
First sight of the patient (electrical connector just unplugged) Brake fluid feed in, just pushed onto hose tail. Plugged with 8 mm hex key.
Wiper arms to come off to remove scuttle panel. My trusty ball joint tool would not sit well on these (first time it's been unable to do this task as supplied) so significantly weaker but more suitable for the wiper arm task. Don't think these must have ever been off, VERY stuck! Scuttle panel and under panel unbolted, access much better. Get two hands at it, luxury! Wiper motor removed too for investigation and lubrication. Right drivers side spindle moves axially (in out) a good 5 mm or so!
Comparison of old and new: Notice metal ball joint and much more extensive dust cover.
Various M6 bolts from scuttle panel have a hard life: So into the phosphoric acid they go Plastic clip came out in two pieces.

Considerable differences left hand drive Vs right hand drive!
Left hand drive plastic pedal bracket, master cylinder assembly docks with pedal bracket, removed together (and hence plastic clip tackled off the car)
Right hand drive: steel pedal bracket. Master cylinder assembly docks WITH THE BULKHEAD! Hence plastic clip has to be overcome on the car, upside down in the foot well with pins and needles in your arm, light plus mirror on stick to see what you are doing and little room to do so. Obviously a whole extra catalogue of appalling language necessary to complete the right hand drive arrangement!

Yes did find a bit of leakage present inside the car. Not gallons but definitely leaking.

Just look at that clip ! Snap a rooney or what. Oh seeing them wipers being lifted off with a tool that only fits in youtube videos , oh the memories
Slap copper grease on them threads when popping the wipers back in it helps a treat

Yes the clip broke when I was trying to remove it, there does not seem to be much play between it and the master cylinder's ball joint, so am hoping it'll fight on fir the moment (as I've not got a replacement line up yet)Huskyxantia wrote: 15 Nov 2025, 14:40 Just look at that clip ! Yes I'm a compulsive copper grease applier, so everything got a dab.
I have always used that ball joint tool for wiper arms - never fails though more modern cars (if you call 2009 C5 and 2016 308 "modern", 16 and 9 years old respectively!)
This is first time I couldn't get it in place well enough and it was seeking to slip (and these were very well stuck!) so decided to bite the bullet and using the grindstone, took down the offending bits.
I can't recall using it on ball joints much! Heard nothing but bad feedback about the specific "wiper arm removal tools" too!

Quick summary:
Trailer trip with Grey 308 tomorrow morning, then hopefully pedal in and bleeding can commence before Sunday is over.
- pedal bracket disassembled, red rubber grease lubricated and back together with a Nyloc nut.
- Master cylinder installed on the car. Despite a bit of red rubber grease on the contact surfaces of the bayonet connection, really struggled to get that into final position. In the end, gingerly pinched with large Mole grips allowed me to twist it roughly 45° to secure it.
- Push in "output" and rubber hose "inlet" plus electrical connector popped on and the covered over by sound insulation piece.
- Wiper motor lubricated ball joints and two spindles. Axial movement was the circlip that should sit in a grove further up the shaft. Unsure why, reseated and seems secure, see how it behaves.
- Motor reinstalled and scuttle reassembled.
- Got as far as installing the clutch pedal and bracket but time, light and enthusiasm for upside down for "hours" all in short supply.
