C5x Voice activation issue.

Unread post by daveprowt »

Hi everyone,
My car has a strange issue that the Android auto does not hear me when I speak to the car, hello Citroën doesn't work either and I'm not sure if it's an issue with the microphone or whether it's some setting I haven't done or is incorrect. I have tried it with Apple phones and it's still the same, so it must be a firmware issue or something is not right with the car. I have had the car back to Citroën but just got the feeling I was going to get a massive bill and it wasn't going to be fixed because the guy seemed clueless.

It is phev vehicle and I have been under the bonnet and disconnected the battery, the central locking and everything still worked so it must be another battery? I am a bit clueless when it comes to cars and they have got very complicated over the years so I don't want to, mess.

Any advice as to what my issue is likely to be would be helpful.

Thanks Dave

If ever I heard a first world problem it has to be that. If the car is still under warranty I'd suggest you go back to the dealer and refuse to take it away until they sort it. If not under warranty think about how much is being able to talk to your car actually worth to you? :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Yeah, I know. I took it in last week, and drove it away after him saying it would unlikely be covered under the Stellantis extended warranty. It just annoys me it doesn't work. It's a top of the range car with sunroof massage heated and cooled seats......but has an issue U wouldn't get in a Dacia duster

You haven't told us if it was new or pre owned - if it was the latter then the previous owner might have changed some settings.

Based on my C4 which may be very similar:

Have you tried it using the button on the steering wheel. In theory its short press to talk to the car, long press to talk to the phone but it doesn't differentiate too well.

Somewhere deep in the settings - it might vene be different for each profile - is the 'listen for hello citroen' slider. I can't remmeber where but I know it exists becaue I turned mine off - it occasionally interjected with "I didn't get that" if it heard something on the radio .

Have a look at privacy settings - they might ove-ride the voice settings and stop it working.

If that doesn't help then yes, hardware/microphone fault or firmware, both beyond me.

Back to the original response, I have played with mine, but find it much quicker to turn a little knob to adjust the heating than it is to engage in conversation with a car. The only real use for me is giving navigation instructions on the move if I forget before I set off (the screen keyboard gets locked out when moving) but I shout at my phone for that, depending on the display there is a normally microphone symbol next to the search bar. It gets it wrong a lot. On balance, I wouldn't be at all concerned if voice control never worked again.

(Looking at your profile, I thought all Peugeot 3008s were gluten free, 8-) maybe not ….)

Have got my Android auto working in a fashion. If I delete andro auto then re install it. It works, via my phone kicks in and makes the call via Bluetooth. Then next day it goes back to not working again . Really boiling my p#ss will be the reason I get shut of the car. It connects to Citroen WiFi but says has no internet which I think is my issue. If I turn the WiFi off on my phone and the car it just auto connects again because Google play services turns it back on......such a small issue, but it is bugging the hell out of me.
My connected services don't work either, which I am about to call and cancel again and ask for a refund. Took it into Citroen in Liverpool and had a mechanic sitting in the car saying leave it with us but expect a big bill, and he seemed clueless as to what the issue would be. The extended warranty I got doesn't seem like it's worth the paper it's written on. Absolutely love the car.....it's just this. Can someone on android tell me when they are connected to the car when it connects to Mycitroen12345 whatever number, does it say it has internet?
Thanks for your reply. Second hand, it's a 22 plate. Have faffed around a lot. Can't find anywhere where voice activation can be turned off. I do get that I didn't get that message if I use microphone.

I take it you have the owners manual?

I had a problem with my USB drive recently, and reset my system to factory, since then have not been bothered to aggree to the privacy request. So I don'y have voice control, preheat or remote charge enable, and my Android phone keep disconnecting, which is strange as Android auto doesn't!!

A little word of warning, when I had an issue with the radar, my loacl franchise (Stoneacre) said if they can not find a fault I would be have to pay for the diagnostic survey £180 (last year). Digging around the web, it turns out that heavy rain confuses the radar and it shuts down - if it happens again I don't care.

The difficulty with all these things is "where's the problem" - the car, the phone, hardware or firmware, settings. Before you spend money with Citroen its best to eliminate any non-car issues.

It might be useful to restart the phone, that should remove any volatile memoery.

First question - is it any better if you connect the phone via usb cable? I know its convenient if it works wirelessly, but as a starting point try the cable.

Second question - do you have any aftermarket devices that may be interfering? After a couple of incidents in our small rural village, including my neighbour getting a fictitious insurance claim, I reluctantly decided to get a simple dashcam. The phone sometimes wanted to connect to that - I've now told the camera not to (its only 'just in case' so if the need arises I will pop the sd card out and read it on the laptop). But just think if your phone is connecting to something else?

Third question - does it behave differently if you are in the drive where your phone may still be connected to your home devices (e.g bluetooth speakers, home network) and does it work better if it starts the connection elsewhere? Stop in a lay by or car park, reboot phone, restart car ... any change?

Fourth question - do you have other phones paired with the car and might it be looking/waiting for those. I have 3 paired, mine, my wifes and my son's. Fine if we use the car alone, but if we all get in the car together it seems pretty random which one it chooses and we often have to pick the one we want via the car screen menu. So have a look at devices and maybe (for now) delete everything except your phone. Maybe even delete all of them and re-pair the one you use, it won't take long and might just help.

Now to phone settings. Android Auto now no longer appears in your apps that you can launch from the screen (depending on Android version) but if you go to settings - apps - show all xxxx apps. It will be in the list. Tap on it and look carefully at all the settings, including the heading "additional settings in the app". You might find something turned off. If you change anything make a note so you can change it back. Under storage in the app you might want to clear cache. Temporary files, you never know.

Back at the settings, apps screen, scroll down to AccessibilityAssisant, that will have stuff about voice control etc., again look around and see if anything might help.

A final phone thought, having done all that and if nothing improves then pair another phone, a friends perhaps, connect and see what happens.

Maybe something will help - who knows.
