1998 XM Exclusive Hydraulic Pressure Regulator

Unread post by gfa031 »

The cut-out pressure slide valve on my 2-port regulator (588684) is broken, and I cannot extract the remaining bit inside, although it slides easily enough. The problem is that the slide valve does not align with the holes in the casting. For clarity, I think the cut-out is the smaller diameter of the two slide valves in the regulator body.
I have a 3-port regulator (588679) that appears in good order (it's in pieces at the moment); can it be used to replace the 2-port regulator on my XM if I plug the third port? Are the internal drillings similar for each type?
I could run an HP hose from the third port to the reservoir if necessary, but I don't know what consequences might surprise me. For information, I have three main accumulator spheres that have split open under pressure. Unlike a similar post from several years ago, I didn't have huge volumes of LHM all over the place. In any case, three big bangs are enough for one lifetime - I don't need a fourth.
Any advice greatly appreciated (I'm in Sydney, Australia).

Could you post a picture of your 3 port to help understanding of this? :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

I have stripped down both regulators, and I hoped to be able to blank off the extra port to the reservoir with a 12x1.25mm plug. However, I noted a difference in the number of drillings between the regulator bodies. Using a medical syringe, I injected LHM into various holes to see where it would come out. On the 3-port reg., The pressure release screw is connected the third port, i.e., to the reservoir tank. On the two port reg, (XM) the pressure bleed screw releases oil into the chamber with the nozzle/hose to the reservoir tank. I really need schematic and/or detail drawings of the regulators' internals, but essentially, the third port cannot be blanked off. So, I am back to looking for a regulator of the 2-port design for my XM. I believe a late model Xantia regulator is the same. Do you any of you have one to sell? I have taken a lot of pictures, but I am unsure how to post them.

There is a guide to posting pictures here.
Note that some digital images, particularly those taken on mobile phone cameras will 'fall over' or even turn upside down, particularly when uploaded and zoomed.
To avoid this, open the images in an image viewer, rotate 90° one way or the other, then back, and save.
Any that are already fallen over or upside down just need to be corrected and saved.

Does anyone know which cars used the 3 port design? I am guessing that they were used on BX, XM and Xantia on cars fitted with an FDV, although I can't see the 3rd pipe in any of the parts listings. Or was it always blanked off?
