406 Heated Rear Window 'issues'

Unread post by ozfrog »

Hello learned people! :)

After the auto electrician repaired the cabin blower fan in my D9 1999 406 a few months ago, I noticed that the heated rear window was turning off almost immediately after being turned on. He replaced two parts as pictured below, plus he did some repairs to wiring.

I've done a search on this forum and I came across one thread where the 406 heated rear window was being talked about, but this person's window wasn't functioning at all. viewtopic.php?p=98132&hilit=406+rear+window#p98132

Nevertheless, I think that the solution put forward is probably applicable to my car as well, even though this timer had been functioning 'as intended' prior to the car going to the auto electrician. I suppose I would like to know three things.
  • Where is the timer referred to in the above thread located?
  • Is it possible that in rewiring the cabin blower fan, the auto electrician has either bypassed the timer for the heated rear window, or worse, blown it? and
  • How long is the timer set to leave the heated rear window heating? (I think it is 10-15 minutes, but if I can get a more accurate guide, I'd appreciate it.)
If you think I need to arm myself with any other information before I go back to the auto electrician in the morning, please let me know that, too.

Sorry about the size of the attached images. I was getting quite frustrated with various websites trying to resize the images to a suitable size. I don't think that this board's software has any in-built tools. If it does, then I'm sorry for missing it.

Sorry I can not help with the problem but to reduce file sizes of photos I open them on my pc and then edit them to a smaller file size, save with a new name and then attach it to the forum post. No need to use any web programmes to do this.

Thanks, I thought of this method after I'd gone to bed. I didn't feel like getting up to fix them, especially since I had to be up early - and in the cold (for Australia) weather. I know you Brits can handle this weather, but I can't!

Sure. I have it on my Mac. But sledgehammer to hit a nail? Still, if that's your preferred method …

If I used GIMP to do this, I'd be using it simply for the practice of using GIMP because it isn't a tool I use very often.

I'm assuming you have checked and double checked the fuses. Also, why do you need a heated rear window in what is basically a desert?

Yes I ask the stupid questions, because normally it is that simple.

You assume correctly on this occasion.

I don't know if you were trying to be funny or not.

I also don't know if you have been to Australia or not.

However, if you have been to Australia, you show a remarkable ignorance about the country. And your attempt at humour was very poor. Frankly, most Australians who I know are tired of hearing ill-informed 'jokes' about the country from even less-informed people who think they know about our country.

But if you want a more serious answer to your question, we have seasons in this country, and especially in the part of the country I live in. And there is no desert within 1500 kilometres, probably more, of where I live.
