Xantia, good point, i'll have to measure the diameter and length of the ram and ask Alasdair if the ones he has are the same size. There is also evidence of rubbing on the bottom of the cylinder lip.
Meanwhile i've ordered one from Chevronics, Inspected and passed as good. At least i Get some money back when they recieve my old one

Hello again.
got the car back together after replacing the scored ram, little drive and everything was fine, next day it got noisy again on low revs, the ram is leaking from the supply pipe, as it's a late model it has got C5 type seals on the rams, can't see the green seal.
Anyone got any seals or know where I can get some from.

I had taken the cylinder out and disconnected the roll bar on that side, no noise when lifting it up and letting it drop and no sideways movement on the trailing arm

Update on this.
I've replaced the suspension unit on the drivers side, both seals are new, Martin at pleiades didn;t have any but Chevronics kindly sent me 2 at no cost, lovely people.
Cleaned and regreased the rear regulator.
While the suspension unit was off i undid the anti roll bar then bounced the trailing arm up and down, no noise and no sideways movement.
With the suspension unit back on and not pressurized the clattering was coming from the unit, the link rod is very loose and wobbly, if it is pushed up it falls back under it's own weight.
so the question is, should this link rod have some stiffness in the ball and socket joint

Are you referring to the part that sits inside the boot, protrudes out from the boot and is pinned to the trailing arm?
If so then there should be no stiffness in the ball/socket joint. They should be completely free moving and yes, that means they will flop around.

Hi Iain,
yes, that's the one I mean.
If I go slow speed low revs over an edge the wheel drops and the link rattles, Ive also cleaned and regreased the springs and moving parts on the regulator so hopefully that will allow the valve to operate quicker and cure the problem. [-o<

I can't say I've ever experienced that noise from that part in all my time of owning Citroens (the design there is the same from CX, through Xantia and into mk 1/2 C5 all of which I've run through the last 30 years!). There should be enough pressure in there sphere/cylinder to keep pressure on the link rod while the wheel extends as it drops into a hole/gets air-borne from spirited driving over a humpback bridge etc?
Maybe others have different experience, but I wonder whether this instead points to a different problem.

This is why I asked if the rods should be loose or not.
I had come to the conclusion that it was either that or a pressure problem, as I said earlier the noise doesn't happen with higher revs.
The regulator was rather gunked up with grease and dirt so it's all been cleaned and regreased, i'm hoping that it was the dirt just slowing down the operation, i'll find out probably tomorrow when I take it for a drive.
All the spheres are reasonably new (couple of years) and it bounces up and down nicely.

It is not possible for that rod to be loose when the suspension is pressurised, the physics of the force from the ram and the relative mass of the suspension arm and the rod ensure that it is always under positive pressure. I think that your rattle is elsewhere.
