xantia rear hydraulic rams

Unread post by peter306 »

Hello All.
Changing the boots and seals on the rear rams,
Is that green washer/guide supposed to stay in position or move with the link arm.

Hiya, I'm sure that green thing is the locating bearing for the push rod. I don't think they are known to come out. Probably could remove it if you were keen. It shouldn't move as far as I know - I think the pushrod from the arm end moves within it.

Hello Graeme,
That was my thought but the book and the info on the forum doesn't actually say so I thought I'd check
Ask the Audience or Phone a friend :rofl2:

They are back on the car with new seals and boots now.

If it works, then in this instance just live in blissful ignorance as to whether it's meant to move or stay put, I say

well I started it up. did some citrobics.
The stop and hydraulic lights kept coming on when i was going from low.
checked underneath and it's dripping from the where the boot goes over the ram, boot was mostly dry so I reckon it was a poorly sealed boot.
Took it off and while I was cleaning the rim (again) i noticed this on the ram, according to what i've read this could make the ram U/S.
little spots and feels rough around them. I've tried fine emery and metal polish, how far do you go.

I wouldn't go too far because the sliding plates on citroen hydraulics are super finished machined to tenths of a micron. Going heavy on these might undersized areas of the piston and it'll not hold pressure. It might be that your piston they're is a bit too corroded and the best option is to try and source a replacement rear cylinder. The Citroën breaker in Billericay might be a good source for one.

Morning All,,
Iain, yes they were, both boots had splits in them, also put new seals on.
Graeme, that's what i was thinking, could leave a flatter bit by the edge.
Alasdair, It's my 2000 1.8 16 valve petrol model, the rear rams have what i understand to be C5 type seals in the fluid inlet.

I will dig out the ones in their boxes I have and check what I have.....if I do I will not need to keep that type as neither of my Xantia's have those fitted.

Part No's are RH-527224 LH-527220 (I assume no Hydractive on your car) . Chevronics have them (2nd hand) £230.80 each

Will let you know later

Hi Alasdair, thanks for that, also noticed there is corrosion inside the ram tube.
I was looking at the ones at Chevronics as they are described as refurbished.

Refurbished is not really going to replace metal that has been lost to corrosion...... seals etc is possible but I do not know if they go that far, maybe just a new boot ?....not sure, you would need to ask them.

I am rather shocked by the price asked for them :)

I only have
527225 HA...Right...HA...until ORG-No 08056
527221 HA...Left ...HA...until ORG-No 08056
527246 HA...Left ...HA...after ORG-No 08058

So, unless your car has Hydractive then it is a no show for all but one of them....only 527246 being (maybe) possable

According to that catalogue the part numbers I need are 527253 or 527254, RPO 08501CJ.
Definitely have to speak to chevronics and pay the money, don't want to scrap the car

I don't know about the economics, but it looks like something that could be fixed using a technique similar to brake piston re-sleeving.

On the other hand, the pistons may well be interchangeable with earlier Xantia berline pistons, regardless of HA or fitting type.
