2.2 HDi engine making screeching noise

I've had this Relay van for nearly a year and it started making this screeching noise, only when in gear, yesterday.

Any suggestions as to the cause, please?

Does it make the noise as soon as you put it in gear, or only when rolling? In all gears?

I believe it starts as soon as it is put in gear, but not 100% sure as I haven't driven it myself in this condition.

Sounds like a stone stuck behind a disc, but you need to confirm if it only does it when rolling.

The other driver said the van was fine for the first few miles, starting from cold, but the noise got worse and changing gear was nigh impossible.

Changing gear impossible as in, the gear lever wouldn’t move/it wouldn’t go into gear? Or could change gear because as soon as you put the clutch in the car slowed down so quickly you needed to drop back down a gear again?

Is there any oil in the gear box ? How many miles has it done, is the clutch worn out ?

It sounds to me like the clutch release bearing has collapsed.

Yep kind of agree with that diagnosis also, based on the extra information about gears - although normally the screeching noise wouldn’t change with vehicle speed? It would be constant as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed and get worse with engine revs increasing?
