Maybe you need to update its USB drivers Zel ;) :)

I well remember those  And just about all generations since...

One in that style I had would run Windows NT4 very adequately and it had the matching tracker-ball mounted on the side in lieu of a mouse...

One of that generation most likely if running NT4...

Which is about the newest one of theirs I think I own.

Also own an unreasonable number of their giant grey granite slabs of desktop-replacement machines too, but it's the little T1200 in my previous post which actually gets used the most.

A question for the more knowledgeable. I've just received my 480 gb SSD ready to try a Win11 install on my old beast. The CPU seems fine but I'm betting much of the other hardware isn't. Once I've downloaded Win11 what are the next steps regarding an install to bypass hardware checks? Also, Jim, you needed to install older display drivers. I remember donkies ago there was a method of making a backup of all the current drivers but it's been that long since I've played with 'puters I've forgotten how.
An idiots guide would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

I can't as you're not an idiot Pete!

Although I can offer this:
Firstly, download the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool for Win 11.

It is necessary to modify the registry to bypass TPM, Secure Boot checks, RAM and CPU.

1. Create a boot USB drive using the tool above.
2. Start the computer and boot from the USB drive.
3. Go to the Windows setup screen:
4. Start the installer, select the language and keyboard layout, and click Next.
5. When the “Install Now” window appears, press Shift + F10 to open the command prompt.
6. Type regedit at the command prompt and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
7. Navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
Right click on “Setup”, select “New” -> “Key” and name it LabConfig.

8. Select the newly created LabConfig item, right click “New” -> “DWORD (32-bit) Value”, and set the following values:
BypassTPMCheck: The value data is set to 1.
BypassRAMCheck: the value data is set to 1.
BypassSecureBootCheck: The value is set to 1.
BypassCPUCheck: value data is set to 1 (if required).

7. Close the Registry Editor and Command Prompt and return to the Installer screen.
8. Click “Install Now” again and follow the prompts to complete the installation process.
9. Enter the product key (if any), agree to the license terms, and select either a fresh installation or an upgrade installation (as needed).
I recommend a fresh install...

As for drivers, I looked for suitable ones on the 'net. Generally Windows 10 ones will work under Win 11 even if not stated. Win 11 will not install them by default if they don't specifically say they certified for Win 11.

I needed no drivers for my HP laptop and just the display driver for my Tosh.

My Tosh asked for thee licence key. I said I didn't have one and Windows 11 successfully activated when I logged in using my Microsoft account credentials where my licence keys for Windows and Office 365 live.

My HP laptop didn't ask as it has a licence key allocated to it. My Tosh doesn't.

Good luck and let us know how it goes :)

Here's the proper idiot's guide if anyone wants it::
Spoiler: show
Remove battery from laptop and wrap in a sealing plastic bag.
Find a cardboard box large enough to accept the PC and the battery.
Pack the box with those items and secure properly with appropriate packaging material.
Write your name and address on a sticky label and stick it in the bottom corner of the side of the box.
Write a much larger label as follows:

Citrojim
Somewhere in Milton Keynes.

Stick that on the top of the box.

Write a small note detailing what you want done and enclose it in the top of the box and seal well. Finally call the courier service of your choice and hand them the box.

Retire to a warm lounge with an appropriate beverage and watch the darts!!
Good luck :-D

Couldn't resist an excuse to dig the T3200 out. Here were probably the best truly portable computer of 1987 in the T1200 alongside the most powerful all-in-one system you could pick up and take with you from 1988 in the T3200.

Granted you'd not want to carry it too far given it's even heavier than it looks.

I'll quit dragging this thread 30+ years off topic now...Even though it would be interesting to know if anyone has a piece of IT equipment that's anywhere near this old that they still regularly use for actually useful purposes.

Those both do actually have Windows on, albeit not really being there for any reason other than for demonstration purposes. All of the software I actually use just runs from DOS.

3.0, IIRC, had a minimum requirement of a 386 processor. 2.0 would run on an 8086 with 512k of RAM, but was not much use for anything, due to a lack of Windows applications.

3.0 was the last version which will run on an 8086, 3.1 required a 286 at minimum, or 386 for enhanced mode.

It's 3.0 I've got on both of these.

2.0 was just basically a slightly more graphically shiny version of the DOS Shell really it felt like and didn't really do all that much that was useful.

3.0 was my first exposure to Windows. With mine I had a couple of quite functional programs - a word processor and spreadsheet. Their names escape me now...

No, not those Mick, although I did have both of those running under CP/M on my Amstrad machines... Both were absolutely excellent and Wordstar I was still using right up to the early 2000s at work...

Thinking on, I think the word processor may have been an early version of WordPerfect. I know it looked entirely different from the more familiar DOS version.

I ran those on my RM380 in the office under CP/M and I remember Wordperfect being offered as an alternative but I was happy with Wordstar. I don't recall another spreadsheet option at the moment. :)
