Excellent well done Jim. That should do you for this version, but please be aware that any new future versions released won't automatically installed via windows update - so may mean sticking with this version, so I wouldn't allow it to try and auto install updates without permission - so you may need to block windows updates and just selectively allow the security patches and defender updates only.

For example, you won't be able to install major future updates (these are named like 22H2, 23H2.... etc., as examples)

Thanks Marc :D That's great knowledge and advice, I'll take great care with updates from now on in...

The install was very quick and easy so if it does all fail badly with future updates I'm happy to rebuild. None of my laptops have any data (all stored in a couple of clouds) on them so rebuilds from scratch are not at all painful...

I do rather like Windows 11...

I like some elements, but hate other parts of the interface, so use a custom interface to provide custom controls and features / tweaks to get it as near as usable for me.

Hi Jim,
I'm running unsupported Windows 11, stripped to remove the unnecessary bloatwhere, games, Skype, one drive..... Etc. And still receiving updates without any issues.

You'll get the regular updates and patches, but not the major revision updates Stu. These will require another install assuming they've not patched it again to prevent this.

I suppose only time will tell, I'll try to remember to let people know, luckily enough, I have a NAS, (Home based Cloud) , to hold all the important files, so a re-install is not too much of a problem.

I took the risk and updated my old Tosh C50 laptop to Win 11 today...

This laptop is well over 15 years old and I did not expect it to be happy despite running Win 10 well enough... It began life running Windows 8. The only upgrades it's had is to up its memory to 8GB and fit an SSD. In its life it's consumed two keyboards (one accidentally due to coffee spillage) and may soon need another!

I was wrong, so far it's running 11 beautifully and if anything faster than it ran 10!

I had to use the old Win 10 display driver but apart from that, no issue at all.

Those old Tosh laptops were always bloody good; shame they're now history :(

Yep, same here. My C50 has 8GB and an SSD as well. The SSD had the greatest effect, it was like a new machine. Mine is the Satellite C50-A-1DV with a 2.40GHz i3-3110M processor. What's yours? I waited until support for Win 8.1 finished before changing to Win 10. I now wonder whether it could take Win 11.

Couldn't agree more. I chose the C50 as great value for money with its 1TB hard disc, non-reflective screen and proper size keys on the keyboard - I can't abide the chiclet type.

Another reason for the choice was the trackpad and its single finger scrolling on the far right of the pad. Unfortunately Win 10 broke that and its unreliability now means I use a proper mouse. Oh, I also disabled tap to click as I was fed up with accidentally "choosing" options.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Tosh laptops were always our top choice of laptop right from the very early days in every area of my work where we used them Paul - nothing came close.

This is mine:

Very similar to yours... I originally bought it for my dad as he demanded a small-footprint laptop with a CD drive - even back then, CD drives were starting to be rare on a small laptop.

Fully agreed about the keyboard, especially it having a proper numeric keypad, something i make good use of. And, despite it being a flimsy membrane it's surprisingly good to type on...

May this machine have a lot of life still left in it - who knows, it may even run Windows 12 when released!

This is not the only IT work I've been doing this week. I've also built a new server for the off-site forum backups. It's a real little tiny one with an SSD that looks more like a memory stick! It works remarkably well and is spookily silent!

This forum is backed up to the off-site server several times a day and is seen as a very critical part of the forum infrastructure. Currently the backup server is an old Lenovo desktop running headless. It's so old I have to stoke it up with coal twice a day...

I do have something of a soft spot for portable Toshibas. Though for some reason I can't seem to get the installer you're all talking about to run properly on the one I use most regularly. No idea why it won't work...

Maybe you need to update its USB drivers Zel ;) :)

I well remember those  And just about all generations since...

One in that style I had would run Windows NT4 very adequately and it had the matching tracker-ball mounted on the side in lieu of a mouse...
