Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Great British Railway Journeys isnt just about Trains. Michael Portillo hopped off at Wakefield tonight, and visited a local shirt maker, famous for their Terylene Non-Iron Shirts! Still going today, remember Double Two Shirts

Neil

At the beginning of the 1950s Double TWO teamed up with ICI representative, Dr Rex Winfield, who had spent his time during the war developing a new man-made fibre, Terylene, which would eventually become known as Polyester. Working with Dr Winfield, we developed the fibre and produced the world’s first man-made fibre shirt.

My Dad would have a couple of these, Grandpa many more, and I could do with one right now. The price tickets for these vintage offerings are just a little steep.

I have one hanging in the garden, rarely used, wasn't expensive, probably about a fiver.

Well its an hour/ its a documentary/ the News Theatre/ News Reel at the Cinema is long past/ The clipped English voice overs and the jolly music are gone.
Interesting though whether in a quick dip in/ small pieces or even the whole lot!

Treat this as a film, or a television documentary it's reasonably lengthy but may well appeal to Peter.
Personally...never heard of British Relay but it appears they were a thing in the 1960's into pay and cable TV. One thing the film does include is the nostalgic school television in all its glory, and some nice pics old fashioned logoed up vans going about their business.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I enjoyed watching that thanks Neil, brought back some memories of working on some of the equipment used when British Relay interfaced with GPO in my early days. We had a shop in Watford and I remember thinking that the monitors looked very much like our Decca TV set, maybe Peter can throw some light on that? I did think that the summary at the end was delivered in a rather Churchillian manner, very normal for the time!!

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I answered my own question about the monitors, it seems that Murphy were the suppliers of TVs as part owners of British Relay. There is more info here.

And Murphy TVs along that time were unique in having oil-filled Line Output Transformers (LOPTs) that looked a bit like an overgrown automotive ignition coil. Didn't make them any more reliable though... Failing LOPTs were a common fault, it being a heavily stressed component and often built to a price rather than for a long, reliable life.
A variation on this theme was employed by Thorn/BRC with their 'Jellypot' LOPTs and used in all their TVs from the late 60s and all through the 70s, including their colour sets. They were filled with a jelly of unknown properties - hence their name - and were almost 100% reliable. Lots failed around them but they rarely did!
