Re: Peugeot 308 SW (2017) ABS/ESP faults

Hi Marc,

Apologies for any confusion. I started the new thread because I thought it had nothing to do with the ASB/ESP faults. It was a specific query about Diabox returning "The system detected error in communication between the diagnostic tool and the machine" when attempting to clear a power steering error, and any other error that instructs one to turn the ignition off and on twice in succession. I raised this with Jim who said it was strange, so I wondered if anyone else has encountered it and if they managed to get around it.

Concerning the wheel speed sensor problem, there has been no recent work on the vehicle since I replaced the BPGA a few months ago and there have been no warnings or problems until this ASB/ESP issue suddenly appeared. When it stops raining I'll check the ESP ECU connection plug and run another diagnostic.

Many thanks for your help.

Best regards

A.

Unfortunately I don't have a wiring diagram for this vehicle, but on the earlier model, the supplies protection & management unit directly supplied the ESP ECU with 2 power feeds and were protected by fuses F4 (20A) and F10 (40A). Of course this may no longer be relevant on the 308 T9 model, but it's possible the electrical connections are not sitting right of there's a power loss to at least one wheel speed sensor.

Ran another global scan between showers.
The front left sensor (C0031) now shows 0.00 for both front wheel speeds.
The right front sensor (C0034) now shows the same values as C0031 for both rear and front wheels, plus control unit supply voltage 14.3 volt (same as C0031).
But now I have no parking brake - the warning light flashes, the siren sounds and I have to leave it parked in gear.
Hey-ho!
I'll try the connection plugs and fuses tomorrow, weather permitting.

That’ll be because the ESP system controls the electronic parking brake, so that has to be expected.👍

Hi Marc,
Is it possible/likely that the problem is with the replaced BPGA? I'm thinking of taking it out again to check the fuses ......
Cheers

Took out BPGA, all fuses seem ok (minimal resistance), connectors seem ok. Reinstalled. No difference.
Waiting for new wheel speed sensor, just in case it's that simple 🤞

Just seen this - of course the unit may be faulty - hard for me to say on the Forum, but there's definitely a supply issue according to Diagbox and it seems to change from one to the other, so see how the replacement goes.

Used Diagbox to actuate the motorised brake cylinders and could hear them applying and releasing ok. Cleared the faults and parking brake working ok. Went to take it for a spin around the block and parking brake errors returned before I got to the end of the drive.

Did a global test, which brought up some new faults in addition to the earlier image above.
Engine management ECU:
U1213 81 - data received invalid
U1205 81 - data received invalid
Urea ECU: communication error
Power steering DAE_BVH2:
U1213 - communication fault between the electric power steering ECU and the BAS/ESP ECU. Supplier fault code 100.
C1406 - overheating of the power steering motor or ECU. Supplier fault code 230
C1638 - communication error, steering wheel angle invalid value
ABS/ESP ESP90:
C1545 00 - front left wheel speed invalid, front right wheel speed invalid, steering wheel angle invalid
C156D 62 - electronic parking brake (FSE) sensors, lack of coherence of signal, hill start assist function faulty
C0031 62 - front left wheel speed 0.00, front right speed 0.00, supply voltage 14.4V
C0034 62 - front left wheel speed 0.00, front right speed 0.00, supply voltage 14.4V

The full test report runs to 12 pages as pdf, so I won't post it here unless requested.

I will replace the front right wheel sensor when the part arrives, but I fear I may need a vehicle electrician to check for dodgy wiring, connections and ECUs.

Many thanks

Update:
Replaced the front right wheel sensor this morning and did BSI reset.
All warning lights gone :-D
Quick spin around the block all seems fine, so fingers crossed.
I must say, though, if a faulty wheel speed sensor is sufficient to cause the Peugeot warning system to throw its toys out of the pram, it makes Microsoft error warnings look almost professional. I suppose it is because they adopted a CAN system to save the cost of individual circuits? In any event, a simple ABS/ESP warning would have sufficed.
Many thanks for your kind and generous help.

Yes CAN systems are in place to cut down on wiring and have been in place for over 20 years to a lesser or greater degree.

But that aside, the fact that the ESP system controls so many other functions and provides continuous data relied on by other systems. So a malfunction in a single wheel speed sensor can cause the dash to light up like a Christmas tree.

An example of my own vehicle that had a faulty wheel speed sensor:

ESP / ABS Faults
This deactivated all the roll back features and cruise control, etc.
Because the speed could not be properly determined, the engine ECU thought the clutch was overheating and started throwing messages about that, and then because of this, put the engine radiator fans on high speed permanently to try and cool the engine area down! So multiple warning and beeps all because of one sensor - could be alarming for anyone not knowing this.
