One for the Cinema's Collection. Previously a series of posts started off with Odeons and went onto others here...

Came across this one via this route. Pashley Cycles had a range of cycles called RH. with the following explanation of why the RH was chosen.
Also in Hall Green I came across the nice cinema photographed in 1970 in Hall Green just after it was closed. The description tells us it was demolished and a Waitrose took its place.from Graces Guide https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Pashley1974 Pashley acquired Gundle, the only other surviving manufacturer of carrier cycles. For many years Gundle models were built alongside the Pashley range, before being absorbed into the Pashley RH range. The RH range was named after Rath's local public house - 'The Robin Hood' in Hall Green. Pashley also made 'SW' (Small Wheel) bikes and does so today under the name 'Delibike'

A small slip of the keyboard being pointed out by Gibbo reminded me of this

Gosh, not seen one for years! I wonder if in 30or so years time if we'll see small chip and pin machines - the ones that work via a mobile phone app. - in this thread; these have largely replaced the old traditional cashbox in many situations...

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I had a very small box of that design in which I used to put my pocket money when I was at infants school. Every Friday night my Dad gave me 1s 6d in the form of three sixpenny bits. I had to put two into the box before going to the newsagent/sweetshop with him to 'pay the papers'. That was his excuse to freshen his pipe tobacco tin without Mum knowing
He usually paid for my sweets and comics too, saying "Put the tanner in your box when we get home and don't tell Mum!" The only problem with the whole plan was that Mum kept the box key so I had to tell her what I wanted my money for before she would open it and give me what I needed as long as she approved of my spending desires.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Great story. I got 6d a week and at one time didn’t spend a penny for 5 weeks to buy a Rolls Royce Dinky toy for 2s 6d. I think it was the first Dinky to have window glass (plastic) and suspension.

This is fascinating in its own right, a Dinky toys full catalogue from 1964 in colour with prices.momag46 wrote: 17 Jul 2024, 10:12 Great story. Your Rolls probably pre-dates this but in 1964 the Rolls Phantom V (no 198) had risen to 6 shillings 11 pence

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Furthermore...the Brighton Toy Museum provides us with a bit of insight into "The Window Wars"
Neil1956: Corgi vs Dinky - the Windows WarsCorgi were brutal in the way that they pressed home their newcomer's advantage, including clear plastic in all their car designs and marketing their range as "The Ones With Windows". This put Dinky into a difficult position: Abruptly relegated from being the unopposed market leader, Dinky suddenly found themselves being thought of by their market as "the ones without windows". Corgi had cleverly defined the distinction between Corgi and Dinky in a way that made the Dinky products (most of which had been designed at a time when clear windows wouldn't have been as practical) automatically seem inferior.
Dinky now had some serious competition, and had to start adding windows to their new models, but the question of what to do with the existing range was more difficult: the more models that Dinky included windows on, the more that buyers considered windows to be the norm, and the more out of date the older models looked. Corgi had managed to take one of Dinky's biggest advantages - the existence of a huge existing range of legacy designs - and turn it against them.
Corgi's models also sometimes also managed to look sleeker and prettier than the Dinky versions, even though it was often difficult to work out why - the aesthetics of designing a good diecast model had changed as the technology had matured, and older designs that had once looked reassuringly solid and robust (and better able to better withstand variations in more primitive casting processes) could now look slightly ... clunky.

I used to get a tanner a week pocket money & straight down to Swifties, the local fag & sweet shop, to swop it & ration book coupons for any sweets available.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Yes Neil, that’s the one. I left school at the end of 1961 so I must have bought that in 58? I still remember the 2/6 price and yes it was the first windowed Dinky and also the first with suspension & this was in response to the Corgi cars that were a big improvement. I think from the introduction of Corgi, Dinky were struggling to keep up.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Some where in the house I have a full St Bruno Tabaco tin full of these cards, not just military uniforms but all sorts of different types, given to me when I was about 10 by an old guy called Bob who use to live in some flats by us, he use to come to our house on a Friday nights to watch the untouchables and have two crumpets done on a fork in front of the coal fire, he would spend all night spitting on the fire and my mum use to go mad at him.
When he died in his flat, one bedroom was full of old TV's he had owned, some that old I had never seen the like of them, none working, when it broke he would carry in there and just leave it, go out and buy another, the the room he slept in that was full of old news papers, some dating back to the 50's all folded and stacked.
Strange Guy always in a thread bear black pinstripe suit and a beige striped tank top, loved the Untouchables and would watch everyone to the end with my dad and then me as well then sorter off home, he gave me the Tabaco box just before he died and told me by the time I get to his age they will be worth thousands, I don't think they are but what a character.

I love the artwork, the history, the variety of subjects chosen, and have picked out examples in previous forum posts pre-dating the thread here, mostly dumped on Picture's of the day.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I looked into them when I was in my 20's and I don't think there are full sets in each collection, but I must have a look to see were they are, in a drawer at home I do know.
We had a few strange characters visiting my parents, one which sticks out was a lady called Shelia her and her husband ken who use to do Shaun Connery impersonations (badly) where the 1st people we even knew who went abroad to Spain one of the Costa's, and it fascinated us and looked at the snaps in awe, they brought us back a straw donkey which at 6 reached my waist with a Mexican hat on?? and wine in a straw covered bottle, which my farther decanted down the sink after they left and after he tried it and pulled some very odd faces as did my mum but the straw donkey stayed for a few years, the cat took a bit of a liking to it and use to rag the donkeys straw legs with its claws and then jump on it's back knocking it over, which in turn made my dad clout it and throw it out, the cat that is not the donkey but it never stopped it, I just remember the awe and fascination we had with them, as they had been to one of costa's, at that time it was pretty much unheard of, abroad, on a plane, wow! the colour pictures were like another world, makes it especially different now when you look around at people and think how many of them have NOT been abroad now.
Weirdest thing was, a few years later Ken had a stoke, when he recovered from it, he could draw and colour brilliant pictures of birds from memory, pre stroke he could not even draw a straight line, how odd is that.
Strange the things you remember looking at pictures of dinky cars.
