Just out of interest, Alasdair, what's your favoured rust converter / treatment ?
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

That looks a bit like a skeleton chassis to me -- it's got nobody to go with? :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Nope, Defender....but just the frame, the rest (suspension mounts etc etc) chopped off and new axles, arms, free floating springs etc added.

If it is not having a mud bath he just throws it at rocks and off cliffs......Mad bugger !

All thick wall tube under the body work.....which is green plastic chemical barrels cut to fit and riveted on !

It's quite an easy task to convert an Activa to be powered by a 2.1TD Alasdair ;)

Something to bear in mind when you start to miss this big gap in your automotive life...

A little bit of AX work needed today.

I spotted a tiny "rust stain" so I thought I would have a look......I stuck in a thin screwdriver......I found two 3mm "pin holes" that were strangely next to each other with no other signs of rot.
I sanded the stone chip away, opened up the holes to make way for a small patch to be made and etched the clean metal ready for welding.

Very strange....

I reckon the result of a flaw in the metal Alasdair, possibly a bit of slag when it was made...

Hole is now De-Holed.......wire feed and welder power all set to the lowest setting ...No2 power blew a hole in the AX tin-foil/original thickness of metal :)
20240523_141203.jpg
I will zinc prime it, fiber glass putty (waterproof) and "dress" that whilst it is soft to recreate the thickness and texture of the stone-chip coating before putting a primer/colour coat on top...as well as touching up the bare metal earth contact on the jacking tag.

More work to tidy up the very neglected AX (Daffodil).

When the car was with Jim we noticed some corrosion under the rear window seals (very common as the inner/outer wings have no seal sealer etc).

The lower edges have suffered badly and a small hole had developed ! BUGGER ! I left it WAY to long.

So had I had to get the welder out and stitch in some small runs to rebuild the edge and fill the 1 penny sized hole.....sadly the head discoloured the white a little in one spot near the hole and that was going to show despite the quite wide seals.

Rather than try to match 30 year old white I have gone for the Mk1/GTi "flying roof" look :).....it is easy to cover the damaged paint with satin black.

Note the use of Viz magazine, some left over Frog and some good old Gaffer tapes....quality bodyshop masking materials :)
