My car doesn't start. I insert the key. The ignition is turned on. The lights on the console come on, then the ones that should be off go off. When I turn the key to start the vehicle does not start. There is no sound. It works when you move the automatic transmission in the P-R-N-D positions 3-5 times. For example, let's assume that it works in P position. If I don't change the gear position it always works.

On the top of the gearbox is a rotary switch assembly. This is between the selector cable from the cabin and the selector input to the gearbox.
This tells the gearbox and other things which mode has been selected by the driver.
For safety, the engine can only be started in P or N. It seems that that safety switch is not working correctly.
Either the switch is miss-aligned slightly or the switch is faulty.

The switches are very easy to find on ebay.

You can also try undoing the the 2 mounting screws and rotating the whole switch A VERY SMALL AMOUNT in one direction or the other.

Between the battery box and the thermostat housing.
