Halfords "Advanced"
I think this is lifetime guarantee (I know the previous Halfords Professional stuff is) = will take it in for a swap next time I am near.

It's never broken before!

Unlike the T55 in my Halfords Professional set, I had three of those before I bought a set of impact black ones. (Caliper mounting bolts: f-ing tight + Loctite= they're a killer!)
Also the PH2 screwdriver to 3/8" drive and I think the PZ2 of same, they've been swapped after snapping, no problem at all. Think a good show for a twenty year old kit!

I'm sure Halfords will be delighted to swap it Matt.. They're usually very good... And it's unusual to break a Halfords tool... I only ever succeeded in breaking one of their breaker bars on a Xantia hub nut... Replaced without question... I didn't tell them I had a length of scaffold tube on the end of it when it let go...

I once got through a load of Draper Torx bits - now they were definitely made of cheese

Gearbox oil comparison!

New and lots of old

1 litre of new stuff, end of this bottle:

Next, what drained from the HDi Coupe (should be approaching 1.85 litres, as above) age and mileage unknown.

Next, 1.8 litres drained from the BE4 gearbox of my 2.0 Coupe. Surprisingly only about 30,000 miles on this and looks nearer the rest than to the new. Don't think it's the synthetic stuff, but some other mineral 75W80, maybe Halfords own?

Right hand side, what drained out of the ML6 gearbox on the C5. Again mileage unknown but it did have a gearbox off job about 4 years ago and the previous owner was at least billed for new oil!

Not much difference on the pictures (other than not enough in the HDi Coupe gearbox!) In the flesh the C5 stuff is definitely the worst, the others similar and none anything like resembling the new.


As the litre pictured is end of my current stock of gearbox oil, this will be a part old part new swap for the HDi Coupe, will aim to do a full change next time I've need to pull a driveshaft out.

Ah yes, I've snapped my Halfords breaker bar end too! Hub nut like you too. Think the C5?

They had new swivel ends, but mine was a different type, so they gave me a complete new bar instead!

Definitely never had a piece of tube anywhere near mine.

Just decanted the C5 gearbox oil into my waste oil container for the tip run. Gosh that was grim: literally lumpy towards the end!?! And this is what's left in the bottom

Just one little niggle for me. That Lubetech can says that it's GL5 and I think the correct spec is GL4.

I agree GL4 is correct, am sure when I bought it, was claimed as dual compatibility GL4 and GL5. Will have a dig.

Have also looked at some fully synthetic stuff from Westway Oils which claims GL4 and GL5

Gearbox now refilled

My normal green hosepipe on same funnel is too large outside diameter for the reverse light switch hole (is fine for a BE gearbox vent breather hole)
