Seems to be buggered, gets to to the screen then the progress wheel will go no further, spent most of the day yesterday fiddling with it, the built in fix programmes ask for a password but none work.
Hate this laptop too.

I'd love to help Eric, but from that description, I haven't got a clue what you are on about :-k

This can sometimes be the case when you are so involved in the problem that you forget nobody else knows what 's going on :-D

If you can explain a little better or pop a photo or 2 up I might have a better understanding of what you are trying to do.

This is just a few of the things I tried Marc, they'll probably come up in no sort of order, I think I've exhausted HP's built in tests and fixes the password stuff didn't matter there was no password set

Best fix for this Eric, is to get yourself a Chromebook ;) That was my solution to Windows problems and I've never looked back...

The occasional times I must use my Windows laptop I find it runs like an arthritic sloth because it's so preoccupied with updating itself...

Chromebook updates are unobtrusive and simply involve a quick restart to apply... I've so far found nothing mainstream that it can't do for me save my weekly shopping market research upload - got to be done as it earns me Amazon vouchers - and a bit of video editing, a job I might need to do once in a blue moon or two...

The Chromebook is definitely a sanity saver :) It ties you tightly into Google but that's of no consequence to me... I use Google for everything...

Ok, so that makes more sense - Windows can't boot because some of the startup files are corrupt or missing. This is where you need a Windows 10 Boot Recovery Key that you can make (when the system was working of course), so that when this happens, you can insert and boot off the key and try to repair the boot files on the Hard Drive.

For now you can try the built in repair functions (Choose the Continue to Windows Recovery Environment), then the advanced repair options to see if it can fix the issue. Don't force restart the PC under any of these conditions whilst it is attempting to fix things or it can make the situation worse.

Ignore the BIOS / self test DOS screen utilities as it's unlikely to be anything there - this seems to be a common windows boot issue because of missing or corrupt boot files.

Infinite patience a different hard drive and windows reinstalled has finally got it running again, guy at the local computer shop wanted me to give him £85 just to look at it. :(
Just need now to sort out the stuff on the old hard drive and dump some of the tat the comes with a windows install.
