Sorry to hear that you had to let yours go, I'll probably be the same if this happens again. From what I could see there's no paint on mine & the rust was covering the whole tower. I tried ringing Autosteer, but there was no reply...I assume they're still in business. I have some airline lacquer in the shed, maybe a coating with it might do a better job this time! (used on aluminium aircraft fuselage to stop dulling/weathering) At least I kept the old steering rack, so it'll hopefully save me on downtime waiting for the replacement.

Trouble is it depends on the rust penetration. If it has already started at the pinion where it enters the rack, then it's too late and will get worse as the seals deform and the leak worsens.
I've never known anything like it - ever. Never had a rack go ever until the X7. A design problem that seems specific to the X7 or dodgy Japanese Steel was used for them. They wouldn't get away with that in the US of A that's for sure.
