These things are quite effective at blotting out addresses and data, although only on a small scale.

I left my bottle of shredder oil at Jim's ready for our forthcoming megashred but ordered another bottle from Amazon when I got home. I should pay more attention to detail when ordering in a hurry:

I had an incinerator to burn all the ivy I stripped off the outside wall and burned a lot of documents along with the vegetation.
Son borrowed it and reduced it to a pile of rust.
Garden bonfires are permitted, as long as it is only vegetation burned. Paper was once vegetation.

A euphemism if ever I heard one!

You'll see loads of arcane stuff on here Ryan It is, after all, the Off Topic area of the forum and one might say shredders are as off topic as you can go - prove me wrongRp0thejester wrote: ↑30 Aug 2023, 19:02 Never in my life would I of thought that I'd be reading about shredders and finding it quite interesting! I need to go to Citroen Rehab....
Careful Mick, you don't want to get those mixed upmickthemaverick wrote: ↑30 Aug 2023, 19:08 I left my bottle of shredder oil at Jim's ready for our forthcoming megashred but ordered another bottle from Amazon when I got home. I should pay more attention to detail when ordering in a hurry:

And just to add a note - paper shreddings shouldn't be put out with the recycling as they do nasty things to the trommels at the sorting plant. Paper shreddings should go with ordinary household waste.

That's where mine always go Robin... I was not aware of the damage they cause to the recycling plant and always sent them as non-recyclable waste as I could not imagine how oily old scraps of paper can be effectively recycled anyway...

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
While we await the material for the shredder bearings I decided to tackle another silly but annoying issue in my bedroom. For the last umpteen years I have been folding the bottom of my curtains up and laying them on the window ledge, as they were too short to tuck behind the radiator and if left hanging simply directed the heat up behind them against the window instead of into the room.
The obvious solution was to make new curtains which are long enough to tuck behind the radiator, or so you'd think. In reality once the new curtains were made and hung the pleating effect still meant a significant amount of heat would go up the wrong side of the curtain. I decided I needed a method of holding the bottom of the curtains back against the wall allowing all the heat from the radiator into the room.
I considered a velcro strip along the bottom with the brush part on the wall but forsaw two issues with that, firstly SWMBO would find it difficult to undo and do up on her cleaning day and secondly in such close proximity to the radiator I suspect the wall part adhesive would give up rather than the hook and loops.
Next I thought about a magnetic strip along the wall with piano wire in the hem but that was immediately dismissed as the wire would stain the curtains sooner or later and I'd be for the cold bath, Besides it wouldn't be any easier for SWMBO to manipulate than the velcro so another failed idea.
Then I hit on what I thought would be an ideal solution, two lengths of pine stripwood 25mm wide and held together/apart by coiled springs. Then it would just be a squeeze and insert or squeeze to remove job, which has no adhesive or metal touching the curtains or the wall to cause future issues. Over the last week I have collected the necessary materials and today I set about making my 'curtain clamp'. I didn't take any pictures during construction because the device is so simple but below are a couple showing it in situ clamping the curtain and a close up showing the exceedingly simple construction. Each spring, there are 5 along the length, sits in a pit in the wood which was filled with plastic resin and has proved to be a pretty firm fixing. With sensible, careful handling, avoiding putting side stress on the springs when fitting or removing, I am pretty happy that the clamp will last longer than me!!

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
Good solution, although I think I would have used magnets and
Stainless steel ball chain.
Cheaper than I expected.

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
Yes I did think about magnets but not the ball chain. My chief concern with magnets was the glue giving up over time being so close to the radiator and therefore experiencing significant temperature variations as the rad came on and off. On my test run with magnetic strips it also proved tricky keeping them from jumping to the radiator itself!!
