You wont hear the VVTI solenoid , its buried in the cylinder head. Does it happen when its warm , cold , at speed, stationary , varies with speed or engine rpm ? Need a bit more info. 67K miles is 107K Km which would be about right for the chain.

We had a C3 with the 1.4 vti engine and that needed a new chain at about 50k miles. It started to give a fault code related to the timing not being right.

My partners 1.6 'Prince' engined Mini, 80k miles, has just had the timing chain problem. The only noticeable symptom was a clatter from the chain area on cold starts which persisted for a few seconds, but it was otherwise running fine. She went for the repair (Cam chain, guides, tensioner and oil pump chain etc) just for reliability. After the work we noticed that the engine is now overall slightly quieter when warmed up.
