Oil change C4 1.6 L diesel.

Unread post by Ceenine »

Put in required 0W 30 oil, replaced oil filter with the cartridge type including some oil, replaced engine plug, checked level, put more oil in, rechecked oil, all correct. Then I fired up and got the message Stop, Low oil pressure. Car has travelled 110,000 gentle kiometres (wife driving). So what is going on there? Stuffed pressure sensor? Air filter holder not tight enough? oil pump stuffed.? The pump was working perfectly well prior to oil change.

Any thoughts?

Has the oil filter been put correctly? It's very easy to misalign it. There is a little noggin that goes in a hole.

That's the wrong grade oil Don.

For Australia (Very Arduous Country) you should be using either 5W30 (B71 2297) or 5W40 (B71 2296).

Australia is in Table 'Unit C' and for your engine (DV6TED4), these are the correct grades. Please see the guide here:

https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... hp?t=67630

Look under the engine codes for Table 'C' countries.

As for the issue:
Did you use the drain method?
Are you using the dipstick to check the oil level or the electronic gauge?
Correct Parts and has the filter been fitted correctly?

Marc, I don’t consider the north west coast of Tasmania is climatically arduous according to relevant definitions. If I lived in Alice Springs or even Adelaide I may concur with your view. It is a bit like comparing the climate of Cardiff with the top of Mount Snowdon.

In relation to your other questions, I used the drain method, and I checked the final level using the dip stick which was provided with the car.

I will check the sealing ring tomorrow. I used the round cross section dimension ring which came with the cartridge. I will try to source a square cross section rubber ring tomorrow which is the same as that which came out. It is an unusual shape. So you think the absolute sealing of the cartridge is essential for pressure control?

Thanks for your very detailed reply.

I changed to the proper square section seal ring and used a different (correct) filter . No problems now. Will change the oil after reading Marc’s excellent oil specification specifier to probably 5W 30 specification as suggested by hm. I will need to educate my filter supplier. His choice was a CooperFiamm filter with no spigot which I believe is appropriate for my 2.2 litre C5 only.

No problem Don - the oil guide is direct from PSA officially, so is based on Country and engine. They have Australia in Category C, as Arduous can mean a variety of conditions or use, like temperature, dust, atmospheric pressure etc., so this is just what Citroen specify for your vehicle in that country.

As for parts, I'd never trust aftermarket suppliers to know the correct part. For future reference the correct Citroen part number for your C4 is:
don oil.PNG
(8)
OEM Original Oil Filter, part: 1109AY, £18.10
Cheaper PSA Alternative , part: 1680233480, £8.44

Inc. UK VAT.
