Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
That's great news Peter
I'm scared to weigh myself these days... And if I did I'd likely need a set of kitchen scales as my bathroom ones may not even register me standing on them... I jest but I know these past few weeks of really upping my running I've lost a bit too... My jeans and belt tell me that!

When SWMBO suggested I should get my weight down I sat on the floor!!
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Knowing me and my needs, if they were still a thing, it's likely my cars would be shod with themNewcastleFalcon wrote: 05 Apr 2023, 09:30Remoulds used to be a thing didn't they![]()

I remember them well and plead guilty to having used them in the distant past..
I also remember cross-plies too and one car I had, an early R4, had tubed tyres. I used to carry a puncture repair kit and giant tyre levers to deal with punctures... It got used a couple of times too!

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I'm not sure about this but it seemed to me that remoulds went out of fashion with crossply tyres. I think once the radial tyre took a hold of the market the retread became the accepted way of recycling old tyres. Only my thoughts with no factual basis whatsoever!!
In the market place now the 'cheaper' end of the scale is covered by the nearly new options. The minimum legal tread depth in some countries is well above the limit here and so the used tyres come off cars in those places and are sold here as nearly new. I'm not sure of the exact numbers but it does mean you can buy quality brand tyres for less than half the new price. there is no real economic gain as the tyres will obviously last for a proportionally shorter time than new ones but at least the outlay for four tyres is less of a hit to the monthly motoring budget!

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I've had experience of them all, in the fifties cross plies on everything, they used to re-cut them to get the tread back, unscrupulous dealers would cut right down into the canvas, then we had re-treads where just the tread was 'glued on' like putting new soles on your shoes. then the remoulds which just about everybody who couldn't afford new tyres went for and especially the used car dealers to make the bangers saleable.
HGVs with re-treads made for some exciting incidents when the motorways came along.

There were also re-tread.
. In the 80s I had a Thames 15cwt van with side windows and one of the back doors welded up. It came with six spare wheels and tyres but like the ones on the van they were all past there sell by date, read illegal.
I took it to a small local garage for something I couldn’t do myself and was asked if I wanted 4 new tyres. He had serviced the local ambulances in the past and they had the same size tyres. These new tyres were branded ESSO!
Never seen any before or after.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I've not come across those either, I used Wipac spark plugs, 3/6d in Woolworths, blue they were. As for tyres in the early days I used to wear them right through to the canvas, no tyre laws of course. I used take take a set of tyre levers, an old innertube to cut up for patches and a repair kit every time I went very far, that was in my 1939 Ford Prefect. 4.50X17s Cross ply of course. I have 17s on the C5 - a bit bigger though.

Wipac was once a famous Buckinghamshire-based company with sites in Bletchley and Buckingham. A Tesco now sits on their old Buckingham site..
