2002 C5 Mk1 tracking adjustment.

Unread post by Xantianut »

Ay up!

Otterchops' dad here.

Well, the googats is slowly vanishing but, after replacing the track rod end I,will need to,adjust the tracking. :gt: :conf: :dunno:

It seems like the only way to do it is to undo the balljoint and turn the whole shebang. Is this the case? :hb: ](*,)

They've let the Frenchman design that......

(Voice from drive: heeeeey!!!!)

You shut up, Otterchops!!! You've given Daddy plenty of headaches recently!!!

Thanks, folks.

IIRC it was possible to turn the inner tie rod on BX and Xantia.....

You should still be able to turn the inner tie rod on the C5 to adjust the tracking.

C5's should really be tracked with engine running on the laser tracking alignment system to allow the suspension to be maintained whilst tracking is being done. Our experienced service manager often had to instruct the 'ATS boys' on how to track a C5 properly by doing this.

Fair enough.

If I,can get it close enough with my Gunson so I'm not all over the road I'll get it set up on the laser gear.

Many thanks.

Back off the locking nut with a spanner, and probably a stilson around the body of the track rod end, then dowse with WD40, go for a tea break, or better still a lunch break.

On your way back from said break where the WD40 is marinading into the track rod end, bring back the firey spanner, and possibly a second stilly.

Use said blow torch / gas-axe to heat the inboard end of the outer trackrod end till hot, but not as hot as to be glowing, and try turning the inner rod with a still.

If the outer end's balljoint starts to articulate too much, use the second stilly to secure the outer end by placing the stilly the opposite direction from the inboard stilly, but on a solid part of the track rod end between the lock nut, and the balljoint.

Now apply brut force, heat and swear words in a mix entirely of your choosing, until inner trackrod can unscrew from or screw further into outer track rod end.

Repeat all steps above for other side, then grease the threads on the inner track rods to make this job easier in future.

Centre steering wheel and set up toe gauges / trakrite / whatevz and adjust to spec.

Nip up locking nuts on track rods.

Go get a well deserved beer as I'm guessing freeing off those twenty year plus old track rod ends was a pain in the plums.

Will I need to remove the rubber gaiter?

Ay up!

Just a thought.

If the balljoint in the inner track rod is seized wouldn't it be making odd noises as the suspension does aerobics? Have to,say I haven't tried to turn it so I may have a pleasant surprise in store,

I'm sure Otterchops will let you know once the enforced break is over.

Will I need to remove the rubber gaiter?
You shouldn't need to remove the gaiter on either the inner trackrod joint, as your first still will be between the flame and the steering rack gator. Similarly, you'll be heating the inboard end of the outer trackrod, so you shouldn't melt the outer trackrod end's balljoint. Just be cognisant of how much heat is travelling through the outer trackrod end lest you melt the balljoint, usually the first clue you've overcooked it is when the grease starts cooking off causing the balljoint bellow to make farting noises at you, like it's blowing raspberries to mock you.

I felt creative so did a graphical communications diagram for you :-)

Blue is a good colour for a C5:

So yeah, crack on with the swear words, if you swear at it enough you'll also give it a full respray in blue paint as well as a mechanical overhaul :rofl2:

I've already changed the outer track rod end with a new one because the balljoint was googats so that will come off easily.

Wish me luck with the inner. Didn't disturb that one......

Just thought you'd like to see the old bus. Aka Otterchops aka My Little Girl aka The Cruise Missile aka You Little $€¥%!

Adjusting the tracking on any McPherson strut Citroen (C5 I/II, Xantia etc) is like on any other car. Basic front end toe adjustment 1A sectiron A..

But you'll need it on a 4-wheel alignement machine to get the alignment correct and the wheel to be straight.

... and leave the engine running as I mentioned - it's an officially recommended procedure for doing this on Hydractive vehicles if doing it properly.
