308 1.6 hdi rough idle, revving

Unread post by Andreasson »

Hey, so ive just cleaned my 1.6 hdi egr valve, and the car has really rough idle. It also cant maintain the idle, after a little while it stalls. Also when revving the engine the rpm goes up really slow, and in regular intervals the throttle feels like it cuts off, if you get what i mean. I have no check engine light on, no issues like that.

Thanks

A full diagnostic is really needed to be honest as there can be many reasons for this sort of behaviour including fuelling / blocked air inlet manifold etc.

Put any codes you have with you VIN here and we can may be able to provide some pointers for you.

I had the following fault codes
P1462
P1351
P0192
P0490
P1459
P0409

Vin VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Also when i try and run it, it produces a ton of whiteish smoke

Kinda like one of the intake or exhaust valves were stuck, and there was no compreasion

Stick your VIN up so the codes can be confirmed.
My 1.6 HDI threw similar codes but is the 16V 90 BHP

P0409, P1459, P0490 all relate to the EGR. Are you checking it with a diagnostic tool that can do actuator tests? Just because it's clean doesn't mean it moves. You should hear a ticking when the engine is turned off. This is the self clean cycle. Mine was dead on the mechanical side and the electrical side. Also it could be the wiring that feeds it. The white smoke, does it smell of diesel? Does it clear a bit when warm? What happens if you run it without the MAF plugged in?

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

Leave it with me (we already have your VIN and the codes in your previous post above) and I'll pop something up shortly. I've been busy on other posts, so can't always get round to everyone with available time...

So looking at the fault descriptors, the main culprit would appear to be your EGR Valve being coked up with carbon, so would recommend that this is replaced or removed and cleaned up.

You can ignore the P1351 Pre-heating relay circuit: Coherence; Relay supplied and glow plugs not supplied (this is a common fault but means your glow plugs need replacing at some point.
Fault Code: P1462
Description of Fault: Electric EGR valve position copy signal: Difference between the stops programmed at short term. Drift of more than 8% of the position of the EGR valve at the lower stop in relation to that learned during the programming at the very first powerlatch (between the key switch-off and the switching of the ECU to dormant mode).

Fault is active under the following conditions:
  • The engine coolant temperature must be between 10°C and 100°C
  • The battery voltage has to be between 10 and 15 volts
Conditions for Fault to clear: 5 starts with driving.
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: -
Symptoms:
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Lack of power
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector
  • Exhaust gas recycling valve
  • Engine ECU ( software)

Fault Code: P0192
Description of Fault: Fuel pressure signal : Short circuit to earth. The fault occurs if the voltage of the fuel pressure signal is less than the minimum threshold of 0.2 V for 40 milliseconds or 2 engine revs.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Ignition on
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Stopping the engine
  • Deactivation of the reporting of faults associated with the high-pressure fuel injection common rail pressure
  • Limitation of pressure in the fuel high pressure common injection rail
Symptoms:
  • Engine hesitating, cutting out
  • Lack of power
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connectors
  • Fuel high pressure sensor
  • Engine ECU

Fault Code: P0490
Description of Fault: Position indicator signal of the EGR valve : Positive loop gap. Positive difference of 30% % between the exhaust gas recirculation valve position reference value and the position measured (For 10 seconds).
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Inhibiting of the diagnostics and air flow sensor plausibility
  • Change to "easy move" torque invalid (Deactivation of automatic mode for the electronic parking brake)
Symptoms:
  • Noise
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Diesel fuel consumption a bit higher
  • Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector
  • Exhaust gas recycling valve
  • Clogged particle filter

Fault Code: P1459
Description of Fault: Position indicator signal of the EGR valve : Valve jammed open while driving.
EGR valve jammed shut while driving for 5 seconds
Cleaning forced by the engine ECU
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Inhibiting of the diagnostics and air flow sensor plausibility.
  • Cutting of all the EGR valve actuators (Turbocharger air cooler) ; EGR valve ; Bypass valve (Intake air heater ) In all operating modes.
  • Cutting of the "exhaust heat recovery" function.
  • Change to "easy move" torque invalid (Deactivation of the automatic mode of the electrically controlled parking brake).
Symptoms:
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Exhaust smoke
  • Starting problem
  • Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connections
  • EGR valve (Jammed closed)
  • Engine ECU ( software)

Fault Code: P0409
Description of Fault: Electric EGR valve position copy signal : Valve sticking during the initialisation. Valve sticking for 8 seconds during the initialisation of the powerlatch (between switch off using the key and the ECU going to sleep).

The following conditions have to be met:

- The engine coolant temperature should be between 10 and 100 ° C
- The battery voltage has to be between 10 and 15 volts
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
Symptoms:
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Lack of power
  • Starting problem
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connector
  • Exhaust gas recycling valve
  • Engine ECU
  • Fouling
