C4 08 Inner Drum Sticks?

Unread post by fromthesamehill »

There is slight play in the steering rack on my C4. Told by the garage that it's ok to drive and wouldn't be worth the cost to replace it.

The MOT inspection was at a different garage. It passed with just the one advisory - (Steering rack has slight free play detected at steering wheel Both inner drum sticks).

Question - Are the inner drum sticks, the inner tie rods? If so, would it be worth finding a garage that would replace the inner tie rods to see if this improves the steering play?

I'm having difficult assessing the play. I parked on a flat road this morning with the wheels straight, engine on, and could see wheels responding to small movement which was reassuring. It doesn't feel like it's wandering on the road, although was leaning to the side of a notable camber earlier.

Thanks

In 20+ Years of repairing cars i've never heard of tie rods being referred to a 'drum sticks' but its the only thing i can think of it being referred to.

I was struggling to find a reference to inner drum sticks online. If these are the inner tie rods, then presumably they are replaceable on a 08 1.6 HDI C4?

What is the likely hood of a mechanic saying the play is from the steering rack, when more specifically it's the inner tie rods?

Got to be the tie-rods (or track rods). Just compare the general shape.

This is not specifically for your car, just a random 2008 C4. It doesn't list the inner tie rods separate, only the actual main tie rod so not available from Citroen however that doesn't mean you cant get them aftermarket.
Best to speak to someone that recons steering racks.

Thanks, found inner tie rods, £20 for a pair. Watched a few vids and looks like it's a replaceable component on the C4. Will find another garage and ask if they can tell me specially if the play is from the inner rod.

"Drum sticks". Never heard tie rods called that before, but after some Googling it seems to be a term used by Ford fans?
