PPS. I see you are taking about Bury Field Newport Pagnell, makes sense now but it wouldnt surprise me if you had driven over 50 miles to one of the other two Bury's to do a parkrun!

I thought I had come across Bury, the one in your neck of the woods as opposed to Lancashire, and yes...it was part of the "FCF Today's County in the spotlight" thread when the spotlight fell on Huntingdonshire (the 92 historic counties of the UK were all covered Huntingdon was one of the last to be drawn out at random (89th)).

First up Bury

Yes its got Holy Cross Church and a convenience store but it was where this sport was invented.

Bury Fen is the birthplace of bandy, surprisingly a popular sport accepted by the International Olympic Committee. According to documents from 1813 Bury Fen Bandy Club was undefeated for 100 years. A member of the club, Charles Tebbutt, wrote down the 1st official rules in 1882. He was also contributing a lot to spreading the sport to many countries.

Presumably when the fens were frozen


So this is Bandy,, popular in Scandinavia and Canada, Ice Hockey with a Ball on a football pitch sized rink, with bigger goals, and more players.

What a difference today... A few days ago I was running in many layers and still managed to freeze my bits off...

Timekeeping at parkrun after a run around the course...

Today totally the opposite... Shorts, short-sleeved top, no hat and no gloves! At the end of my run I was boiling my bits off

Camera awaiting its proper battery charger today from Amazon Prime not arrived yet but they did indicate Tuesday up to 10pm so there is time for them to keep their 100% do what they said they would do reputation.

Meantime the temporary battery recharge arrangement allows the camera to continue clickage so this is what caught my eye this morning. Rocks, trees, vibrant greens of thriving mosses and liverworts and jetisoned car seats merging ungracefully into the natural environment.

Not a walk in the black forest...but a walk in the damp woods

It was good to get out on the bike today... My last decent ride was so long ago I was starting to get serious withdrawal symptoms...

I'm sure this village has come up in discussion in the past... I still think it enjoys a great name... It's quite a pretty little place too

Yes I remember it and the quirky name. Maybe a railway bridge nearby. A very easy search with that name!

Yes, on the old Northampton to Bedford line and once there were two overbridges on the edges of the village - one quite close to where I took the picture today...

The bridges are long gone and unless you know exactly what to look for there's no trace of them and obvious evidence a railway ever ran around the periphery of the village... Amazing how quite substantial earthworks and civil engineering has been all but eradicated...

There's some more easily seen remains as you approach the village of Turvey and there the very fine station building still exists as a private dwelling...

Blossomville mentioned 7 times with a bit of a Pylon theme for some of them seeing as it is on a transmission line from Sundon to Grendon!

I picked it up from some of your photo's of Fingerpost signs and posted this up which does have a nice picture (not of Newton Blossomville though as the post went off on a tangent!

I like an interesting or unusual place name, and some cropping up on the fingerposts fall nicely into that category for me .

Some of them like "Newton Blossomville" appear almost "made up" like they come from a children's storybook.

Herstmonceux caught my attention, and wiki came up with a few interesting little snippets, and there is a rather nice Castle of the same name, which is now home to the Bader International Study Centre of Queen's University, Kingston, Canada, and the area therefore enjoys an influx of Canadian and other international students each school year.



as for seemingly storybook names wiki also lists this little group of hamlets in Herstmonceux parish-

Cowbeech, Foul Mile, Trolliloes, Cowbeech Hill, Stunts Green, Ginger's Green, Flowers Green and part of Windmill Hill....just misses out Camberwick Green and Trumpton

You are adding to my vocabulary on a daily basis Jim arcane yesterday and sobriquet today. The context gives the meaning but I looked up both definitions in the dictionary just for that extra interpretation
