Re: 'Fingerpost' Direction Signs...
Looks like you had a lovely ride, Jim. I enjoyed my 30 miles too!
All the signs around near my home in East Sussex seem to be this style, made form wood.

That's a lovely one Fake
That's one cracking bike too
It was certainly a lovely day for it yesterday but the SPF50 was not 100% fully effective as I am finding this morning

Re: 'Fingerpost' Direction Signs...
I like an interesting or unusual place name, and some cropping up on the fingerposts fall nicely into that category for me .
Some of them like "Newton Blossomville" appear almost "made up" like they come from a children's storybook.
Herstmonceux caught my attention, and wiki came up with a few interesting little snippets, and there is a rather nice Castle of the same name, which is now home to the Bader International Study Centre of Queen's University, Kingston, Canada, and the area therefore enjoys an influx of Canadian and other international students each school year.
as for seemingly storybook names wiki also lists this little group of hamlets in Herstmonceux parish-
Cowbeech, Foul Mile, Trolliloes, Cowbeech Hill, Stunts Green, Ginger's Green, Flowers Green and part of Windmill Hill....just misses out Camberwick Green and Trumpton
Lovely
Regards Neil
PS...I am liking how the fingerpost sign images are developing a style with the means of transportation featuring as well as the the sign itself. It may have to be called the citrojimesq school after the originator, although it does have a touch of the Jean Baudrillard about it.

The real Camberwick Green, Trumpton and Chigley were reputedly not that many miles away, being Wivelsfield Green, Plumpton, and ChaileyNewcastleFalcon wrote:

About a mile south of Herstmonceux Castle and the observatory is Wartling - the site of an old radar bunker that I've occasionally been involved with the rescue of. It suffered "a bit of water ingress"

Not to mention Toys Hill, Wyre Piddle, Piddle-in-the-Street (I kid you not), Church Hougham ('huffem'), Pratt's Bottom, Fulking, Nettlebed with Potten End, Painshill, Snodland, Normandy (just outside Guildford), World's End (several), Christmas Pie (a short distance from Normandy), The Slaughters (Upper, Lower...), Clymping.
And, of course, Godalming - which always seems to raise a smile. We actually lived there, twice.
And I just remembered The Wallops - all three of them, Upper, Middle and Lower...

Re: 'Fingerpost' Direction Signs...
I lived for a while just off Titty Ho, a street in Raunds, Northants...
It used to be home to a classic car dealer - Titty Ho Motor Co...
I'm loving how this thread is developing
Just the other day I had a problem getting someone up here to believe the address of dad's temporary Nursing home.. It's in a road called 'Behind Berry'. It's in Somerton and nothing unusual to me as I've known it all my life but to folk up here it was met with incredulity...

There is a tiny village called 'Oxbridge' just north of Bridport and a number of others that are pronounced nothing like they are spelt - but I can't remember any at the moment.

I pass a fingerpost sign on my way to work for Turkey Island (it's near Harting, West Sussex). Perhaps we should have the two signs together and we could have a Turkey and Ham Sandwich

Re: 'Fingerpost' Direction Signs...
For not pronounced as spelled, there are the well known Beaulieu, Happisburgh(my favorite), Belvoir, Meopham, Ightham, etc, etc. Near here we have a Ryton-X1-Towns and Knocking. I find the derivation of the names more interesting than the actual name, though many appear difficult to fathom. CatchFrench in Cornwall - clue must surely be in the name, although those I've asked claim no knowledge; and of course London Apprentice.... conjures up a lovely picture? Praze an Beeble anyone ? Narkurs ? England if full of delightful idiosyncratic place names; long may they continue to be so. I've often thought of starting a crusade to restore old pub names and make them grade2 listed .

Re: 'Fingerpost' Direction Signs...
If the Internet is to believed, I am fairly certain that apart from "The Pickled Egg" in St.Helens there is no other pub in the entire world called the Pickled Egg apart from the FCF's own virtual pub (I imagine that the St. Helen's pub has no idea how unique it is!).harryp wrote:I've often thought of starting a crusade to restore old pub names and make them grade2 listed .
Pub Names do appear to be a century or so out of date as humorously illustrated by Cluff in his inspiring cartoon strip.

Re: 'Fingerpost' Direction Signs...
I used to live near Ightam and Meopham at Borough Green, there was also another place near us called 'Trottiscliffe' pronounced 'Trossley'.
Down here we have Beaminster pronounced Beminster, Crewkerne - Crukern and very near us is Uplyme, actually
Up Lyme and Chideock, pronounced Chidock and lots of others I can't remember.
