I’ll give the MAF a go tomorrow and report back my findings.. fingers crossed..
It is a DW8 and It does have a wax stat that seems to be doing everything it should.. taught cable to pump when cold and slack when warm..
I thought I knew this engine inside out by now the amount of work goes and money I’ve put in but this has got me stumped..
keep it coming all we can solve this.. eventually!!

I'm surprised it has a MAF to be honest - I don't recall one on my dad's previous DW8 206

As it’s got MAF and basic ECU..
But not 100%..

What happens if you unplug the MAF? On the 1.6 HDI 90 it throws the MIL but the engine runs normally as it goes to a default setting.

I'd doubt it... Waxstats seemed to go obsolete in the early 90s when fully mechanical pumps were no longer fitted....

No no lights come up and engine just runs the same.. noisy !!
If by a wax stat you mean a cable that comes from the side of a coolant housing by the head and pulls on a lever on the injection pump.. then yes it has one..

Just a odd one to throw out there. When the engine is ticking over, is the aux belt crank pulley running true?

Yep sure is, new stretch bolt to pulley fitted too..

Mine has the wax stat still no solution the immobiliser solenoid seems to be working fine there is another solenoid on the bottom of the pump feed seems intermittent to it any ideas what it’s for

Thanks for confirming, interesting yours is a 1999 and more complex than my dad's (2000) 206. My memory was correct, no MAF on the 206:

Hi Matt, just to clear up a little confusion..
I have kind of hijacked this topic from Doggone1 who started this post..
That’s who the first picture was posted by..

My expert is a 2005 DW8B..
Doggone1 the solenoid you see on the injection pump is the advance actuator..
You should get 12v supply to it.. does it tick when ignition is switched on??

Afternoon all..
something I noticed about my 2005 expert this morning is that it ran like a bag of hammers pumping out lots of smoke and 50mph tops for about 7miles till warm then I pulled into a lay-by turned it off and rather than adjusting the timing on the fuel pump like I’ve been doing for days I simply turned the key and started it again and all was much better..no smoke and good acceleration and 80mph..
I’m now thinking it an electrical cold start issue rather than a mechanical timing issue.. your thoughts please..

Sounds reasonable, perhaps one of the thermal sensors is misreading.
While it caused no problems I did have similar on my last C5. Started it one morning after it had stood unused for 48 hours and warning lights came up, the thermometer reading was at maximum and an overtemperature message on the screen. It clearly wasn't too hot, just the opposite. New sensor fixed it and no further problems. The car ran as usual though.. As yours is more recent perhaps the sensor is affecting the injector performance.

Was that a temp sensor in the coolant system ??
I’ve currently got a MAF on order should be here Wednesday..
my MAF has 5 wires coming out of the plug and I think I’ve read some where on here that one wire is a air temperature cable which I’m guessing again talks to the ECU.. I may be talking nonsense but I’m trying everything.. haha..
