Sun causes a lot of pressure, mine was driving through water as the rear ones where new fitted by previous owner, if the rims are rusty then that leaks air and will let the water in, our roads flood big time here, as from that i tend not to drive through water at great depth now.Steve Walsh wrote: 14 Oct 2022, 08:42 Never heard of water getting into tyres through driving in water, the air pressure alone must be enough to keep it out, as well as the bead seal area. Seen plenty of air lines with water or moisture in. My own in a nice dry workshop accumulates some and i drain it about once a month.
And as for checking tyres/pressures I am OCD. Every Saturday when home I check both cars, Both Motorbikes, Both cycles, 2 wheelbarrows, a ride on mower and a sack truck... Wife and friends take the p*** , but I know they are always ok..
Also temperature makes a huge difference to pressure readings. Park a car with sun on one side and check them after an hour. You will be amazed !!

Re: Air pressure
I cant see how driving through a deep puddle will cause water to enter unless it is very flat, At 35psi it would have to be about 80ft deep to overcome the pressure and 2 1/2 foot deep for 1 psi.

Tyre squirm?

Re: Air pressure
Just to chime in, I too can't really understand how the water could get past the bead with tyre under pressure.
Compressing air means it becomes saturated (100% RH = the maximum amount of water it can hold as vapour, after which it begins to condense out) so without dedicated dryers (refrigerant or desiccant) then a good amount of water in compressed air systems is quite normal.
The humid air delivered by the airline would feed enough moisture in to allow corrosion to take place inside the tyre.

Re: Air pressure
Well , I have removed a wheel from my ride on mower, pressure is 1 bar, 14.5 psi. I have dunked it in the wifes rain water tub, and weighed it down to the bottom, about 2 1/2 foot deep. I will leave it there overnight and pop the tyre off tomorrow and look inside

Re: Air pressure
That will be interesting, I'm using a ride on this sunday which I've a puncture to repair first ill see if there's water in that and see if i can take a photo of my findings.

Re: Air pressure
My puddle was half a mile drive the car eventually stopped with just yards to go , i had the picasso recovered and while the recovery driver was putting the car on my drive i was taking his lorry air box apart and drying his air filter with the wifes hair dryer lol, if id of lifted my air intake out the way as there low i belive i would of made it home, as the photo shows this was the shallow part , its a small country lane 70+ vehicles had to be recovered 2 days later the council put warning signs out , the water had nearly all gone.Steve Walsh wrote: 14 Oct 2022, 11:38 I cant see how driving through a deep puddle will cause water to enter unless it is very flat, At 35psi it would have to be about 80ft deep to overcome the pressure and 2 1/2 foot deep for 1 psi.

Fantastic!
I love an experiment that anyone (beyond those aware of this discussion) would like attribute as an early sign of madness!
Of course experiment 2 is likely to involve slamming the wheelbarrow wheel into the water at ever increasing velocity, then you can establish if there's a critical speed for Rufford ford high speed runs!
