C5 rear suspension pipes & part number request

Post by aerodynamica »

I'm beginning to think the C5 X7 is a summary of galvanic corrosion. I've never seen such rusted fixings on any car! and my 20 odd years of Citroen ownership has been with CXs and Xantias etc all 25 + years old. In comparison my 14 year old C5 has so many incredibly rusted screws, pipe unions, bolts where an alloy fitting or casting is the main structure.... very difficult. Maybe my C5 'Old Nim' is an isolated example though..

Anyway, I have finally got the new front to rear hydraulic pipe fully routed from the BHI unit back to the rear suspension Hydractive 3 regulator and I'm happy with that. I now have a problem with the thinner pipe that continues from the straight joiner to the rear regulator. It looks rather rusty and I am thinking it's going to explode at some point in the next 12 months.. This pipe with the part number 55305N is very hard to find! And the only one I found in stock in Germany can't be sent because they will not send to the UK (possibly brexit that I didn't vote for) so I'm stuck. The part number also seems to have changed for later cars because I only see 55305VN or VP and I don't know the difference.. One might be the C6 part number but the diagrams I've seen show a pipe that is identical to mine so I'm unsure.

This is the pipe:
rear hydr pipes with part numbers.jpg
rear hydr pipe C5C6.jpg
C5 X7 rear pipe.jpg
Anyone know if the pipe and fitting are still available? Parts 2 and 5 in the last picture.
The second picture is the part they will not send to the UK

Slowly replacing all the rotten bits at the back:
20220806_154015.jpg
Incredibly the 4 bolts that secure the rear hydractive unit mounting plate to the rear subframe have all loosened! they look like they've been stored in a harbour for the last 30 years but all loosened and that bodes well for replacing the rusted hydractive unit and two rear L & R suspension pipes that I have ready refurbished. I need these two parts first in readiness before attempting to change the lot out. If anyone can check on the current parts availability of these items that would be great!

A bit confused Graeme - your first picture is for part (4) and that's not the correct diagram as your build date is 11505 and that diagram is for later vehicles. Part (4) part 5270VF is still available from Citroen, £279.68

Item (2) is part: 5270VP, £191.06
Item(5) is part: 5280T3, £23.47

Both of these are showing as available from Citroen, all prices VAT inclusive.

Thanks Marc, sorry for the confusion - I just clipped the diagrams from google searches. the part VF is the RH rear suspension pipe but I didn't look correctly, it's item 5 after all. I wonder what is different with this part on later build dates.

Graeme,

I've always thought pipes could made up with standard flare fittings and an adapter used at each end. The Citroen make up for the flares is NOT available. The savings would be worth it alone.

Items (5) the union (part 5280T3) and item (4) (part 5270VF) are the same part numbers regardless, there is no other part number for these Graeme.

There are other differences for item (1) the hydraulic pipe for example, specifically for the V6 engined models (2.7 & 3.0).

Further enquiries for this part and it is absolutely unavailable.. I cannot persuade the German part supplier to post to the UK nor the Ukrainian supplier who only ship within Ukraine save for Donbas region. Fair enough - I wished them the best and support for them. My plan now is to make up a new pipe using the two original ends of the pipe and straight joiners using my 3.5mm citroen pipe flare kit and copper pipe. I think the rubber flex section in the original pipe is for the movement between the subframe and car body although I can't imagine this would be very much (??) so I'm making the pipe up with a coiled section like the old Citroen method for the rear brake pipes and hope for the (long term) best.. Here's hoping... I'll document it for anyone interested.

It's kind of sad that you can't get replacement parts for a car that stopped production 6 years ago but hey..

Working on the C5 today and that rear pipe is looking very corroded...

I couldn't wait any longer to find a replacement pipe since they're totally unobtainable so I set about with plan B that is to attempt to make up a new pipe by joining the one good end I already had from the front suspension regulator I got from Lithuania and the best I could rescue from the original on the car..

Here's what I made up
20220827_160652.jpg
The coiled part is to allow a bit of flex. The original pipe has a short rubber section for this purpose.

And here's the original pipe
20220827_140859.jpg
20220827_141147.jpg
With a fair bit of wrangling I got it to fit
20220827_170606.jpg
20220827_170632.jpg
Can see the old front to rear pipe end still dangling down here.

Pressurised, lowered and fully depressurised with the lexia and so far so good.

Unfortunately I couldn't replace the full rear hydractive regulator and the L&R suspension pipes. The RH pipe connection is very inaccessible and I could not undo the securing screw. The LH one did loosen.. I would have got it if it was a standard hex bolt but the Torx screw is a nightmare. I'll get them some day..

I did manage to connect up the new front to rear suspension pipe.. I routed it in place a few weeks ago alongside the original pipe and left the ends unattached because routing it was a big enough job itself and I also fell ill.

Anyway! It's a copper pipe with special adapters on the ends to fit and it works well.
Can see the new copper suspension pipe fitted at the BHI unit. The old pipe is still there but I'll relive it in due course once I'm happy that the newb pipe isn't leaking or anything

So a productive day and finally have no rusty pipe in the car.. well ok the L&R rears but they don't look tooooo bad...

If I can source a replacement pipe end-to- rear strut fixing screw I'd consider removing the struts, cutting the pipe to allow removal and deal with the fixing screws on the workbench then replacing the lot with my refurbished pair of L&R pipes and then of course the rear regulator with the refurb that's been waiting for months.. incredible that one screw prevents all the other stuff from being removed..

Reasonable day overall. :)

Ha, and I was right about the original pipe...
Looked rusty and it was..
Looked rusty and it was..
A lot of the black plastic coating flaked off and there were some really thin bits of the pipe when the rust was all brushed away.. the section I used to make up the 'good' end actually just broke off from the rusty pipe so it was unlikely to last the winter without going pop

Don't think yours is an isolated case, lots of similarity with mine (2009) - worrying to read about such part scarcity.

One question, and please forgive my ignorance -

The Citroen flair is not available - what is so special about it and who's up for making a flair tool to overcome this issue?

I'll confess I have not had need to delve into my suspension hydraulics as yet so haven't seen these flairs in the flesh as yet.

Hi matt, the flare on the c5 is totally different to the original citroen hydraulic pipes from the 1955 DS to the last 2001 Xantia. They used a kind of 'bubble' flare that might be called a 'lockheed' pipe union.. it was simple and worked very well. The C5x7 has a complex multi part pipe union with an O ring, nylon ring, tapered thrust bearing and then the screwed union nut.. no one sends to have the kit to make it up. I spoke to plieades on Sawtry who've been in the citroen hydraulic repair business for decades and they don't do it because there's so few C5s that they never get asked to fix these pipes and it's not worth them getting the flaring kit that costs hundreds.

Looking at the flare it actually looks kind of like t
You could take an old citroen pipe with the bubble flare
And cut it half way along the 'bubble' and it could be the same as the c5 type so long as you got the diskette right. You'd have to reuse the o ring and thrust bearing thing but could be done I think.

Kenny, I think I mis lead. I don't have a pipe former for the C5 type only for the old citroen type. I used the straight joiners to join the pipe sections I rescued to reuse the c5 pipe unions.

As for the front to rear, I got a kit from a Russian guy in St petersburg (before the war...) and the adapters are his own solution I believe. I actually thought you also had the same kit for yours?

Thank you for the C5 X7 flare description, I've zoomed in to your pictures and following description and images together have got my head around it, I think!

Rather trivial question next, what's the lurid green - some sort of rust / aluminium oxide treatment or just a very snazzy paint job?

For rust treatment I can recommend "phosphoric acid" paint it on or better yet dunk the rusty lumps into a pot of it. Just a note of caution though - a glass jar or a plastic Marg tub is ok. Don't put it in a tin, like I did, as it eats through the bottom! (And makes a mess of a chipboard shelf too!) I bought it in 5l bottles off eBay.

Ha, yes the green you see on that pipe is actually some caliper paint that I have to paint refurbished hydraulic blocks etc. I used it on all the bits I refurbished on my recently sold Xantia. The reason there is that one small bit of paint on the pipe end in the picture is that I used that pipe to blank off the hydraulic port on the regulator when it was painted months ago. I then used that same pipe end to make up that new pipe yesterday. It came attached to the suspension regulator I got off ebay from a Lithuanian supplier although they'd simply cut it further up which is a shame because it was in very good condition. They also supplied the good condition L&R rear pipes that I sanded back, zinc primered x 3 layers and yes, you guessed, painted green... the caliper paint is super thick like hammerite so my hope is they won't rust in the car's remaining lifetime..
