C8, anti pollution system isn't working.

Post by Rp0thejester »

'06 C8, I got a warning, anti pollution system isn't working. I put dpf cleaner in around 300 miles ago as it warned it was due to block and had coolant low level warnings. Coolant level is at max, had no alarms since (1 month). Now got yellow warning light and comp screen says anti pollution system isn't working. Is it a faulty sensor? I do drive the car at high revs at times as live near hills, 4th gear is my friend! Anyone else had this issue? Any advice appreciated.

Are you getting any other messages?
How many miles has it done?
It may mean the filter is getting clogged, but I'll have a better idea once you provide the mileage assuming it's the original filter..

Since putting the dpf cleaner in it stopped all dpf due to be blocked and coolant low warnings. The car has done 103000 but the engine only 80k (best guess)

Ok, so if on the original DPF you are on the outer limit. It doesn't matter about the engine, but how much DPF additive has gone through the system.

The Eolys fluid contains an organic compound called Cerine. This, along with other engine-borne matter, cannot be burned off in the particulate filter through regeneration, so ultimately causes the filter honeycomb to block along with the ash.

So you may be due for a new DPF, or it will need taking off and deep cleaning. So if on the original it has done 16 years of service....

I bought the car with 88500 miles on it in 9/2012, it had a recon engine in 6/12 with 33700 miles and new turbo in 7/12 and service. I even got it the 100k service before it was due from Citroen in 7/14 at 93556 car mileage not engine mileage. Would my C8 warn me of additive problems? Most later vehicles will provide a specific warning message (Risk of Particle Filter Clogging) or similar - but the earliest handbook now available is for the 2008 onward models which is the same, so may just provide the engine symbol lamp (Depollution warning lamp). You may get a message like "FAP CLOGGED OR OVERLOADED".

I know there was an issue if this message was displayed on vehicles with a mileage of under 74k miles on vehicles like yours that use Eolys 176 additive. This concerned water condensation from the exhaust entering the particle filter and interfering with the differential pressure sensor (or causing it to go faulty). But in your case, the vehicle is over this mileage so I think it more likely that it is the filter starting to become blocked.

This being the case, it will gradually start to get worse as the warning may become more frequent. This mileage is about end of service life for the first generation of filters. So if this starts to become more frequent then regeneration will start to not make a difference if it is starting to become blocked.

From Citroen, the particle filters range from £694 to £1100 depending on whether you buy an original OEM or a cheaper version.

The original part was 1731NG, so if you search on this, you can find other suppliers a lot cheaper - for example from about £100 ex shipping - there are various brands and quality of course each with different guarantees.

It may be worth having it cleaned at an auto centre - there are in-place cleaning kits now even Halfords :yikes: provide this service.

It could be anything, it needs to be diagnosed before you go forking our for a new DPF!!! If it was end of life you would get a risk of filter clogging message that won't go away. Depollution fault is just generic engine management fault indication.

Well the plot thickens. I reset the service indicator this morning on start up and depollution message appeared. Went for a drive, parked up. Got back in car and the message and light has gone. But this time I'm getting coolant level low whenever I hit a bump. Could it all just be down to an electrical fault?

If the fault is temporary then the light comes on and stays on for 5 starts then goes out. The code will be stored so it can read. Whether the low coolant level has anything to do with it is anyone's guess!

Have you checked the coolant level? It sounds like it mat be near the minimum, Going over bumps may be causing the coolant to slosh around triggering the warning message, You may also find it doing the same thing when cornering.

As for the in situ DPF cleaning, I would only use this on a 'sealed' DPF's that cant be split, In the case of your C8 this DPF can be split open & given a proper clean, you will never get as good a clean by spraying it in through a tiny hole, you cant see if its doing a good job either. I can highly recommend the Tunap DPF cleaning system if you can find a garage that uses this It really does bring the internals up like new. It can be used in situ too but works much better with the DPF off the car.

Of course as Richard says get the system diagnosed properly first. Anti pollution system fault does not necessary mean anything to do with the DPF system, I could be pretty much anything to do with the engine management system.

I check the coolant regularly and it's always just below max, I'm thinking old/dirty coolant sensor or a wire break? I used to get the coolant warning on and off and dpf due to block at the same time but nothing since adding dpf cleaner to the fuel tank about 200 miles ago. And then suddenly anti pollution popped up and has no disappeared. Could it be related to the 'dpf fluid'? And is there any easy way to check the level?

I added redex dpf cleaner and no dpf or coolant warning since. I wonder if it was getting blocked and transferred excess heat to the engine confusing the coolant sensor and that the anti pollution was a 100k warning that the dpf fluid needs filling. Just a hopeful assumption as she has been running like a dream since putting dpf cleaner. Until...
