One of the wonderful anomalies of the Cold War is that the Ordnance Survey would leave off 'secret sites' from their mapping in the hopes that no-one would notice. The Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston, Berks, is a good example.

Now you see it, now you don't

So in a not that satisfactory selection process, Berkshires pub of the day turns out to be this

Royal Berkshire is becoming spookier by the minute. The Bull is under consideration for our lunch tomorrow if we make better progress than The Swan at Pangbourne. Mooring at Goring (I'm a poet and I didn't know it! :-D ) will get us close enough for a mini cab or even a walk if the weather is good!!

"Three Men in a Boat" went from Kingston to Oxford (and back), so you will be following part of that route.

Thatcham testing - Thatcham
Thatcham testing - Thatcham
A lot of the car crash testing you've seen footage of will have taken place at Thatcham, Berkshire.

"Thatcham Research was established in 1969 by the motor insurance industry in 1969, with the specific aim of containing or reducing the cost of motor insurance claims while maintaining safety standards.
We remain the UK’s only ‘not for profit’ insurer funded research centre, and hold a unique position thanks to our involvement and engagement with vehicle manufacturers, regulators, law enforcement organisations, automotive bodies and insurers to provide a holistic view of the benefits or shortcomings of vehicle technologies. Our research is at the forefront of vehicle safety, security and repair.
Thatcham Research has an increasingly influential role in vehicle safety testing on behalf of the widely respected Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme). We carry out a range of highly complex crash testing as well as collision avoidance scenarios, and are leading the development and assessment of new testing protocols for the very latest vehicle safety technologies."

Probably my finishing entry on Berkshire's day-ish in the sun. Mick may be back with some pics, so it will be left open until he does so from his day out, should anyone have more to contribute or pass comment on contributions made.

So this Berkshire settlement gets the treatment.

A very famous Town Hall if you like carry-on films with Anita Harris in them

Image

and also the manor of the Hacker Brothers, Ron and Arthur.

No not gangsters ruling the town with a rod of iron but responsible for things like this...
and this identified by CitroJim as a Hacker Mayflower!

Here endeth my Berkshire contributions.

Before the county moves on I'll leave this post to edit in any of the unfound car registrations I can find.
In the meantime here is the MO Neil found and linked to earlier: :-D

West Lothian: Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

The wikishire page is here https://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/West_Lothian

Main settlements are
Armadale
Bathgate
Blackburn
Bo'ness
Broxburn
Linlithgow
Livingston
South Queensferry
Whitburn

I have set foot and wheels, and clicked shutters in West Lothian, so there will be some original photography to adorn the day-ish in the spotlight for West Lothian. Of course from South Queensferry the vista encompasses the world famous Forth Bridges, all three of them.

Early strike with an original image.
The strategic crossing of at South Queensferry and in the historic county of West Lothian

South Queensferry lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, 10 miles (16 km) west of Edinburgh. It has been an important crossing at least since 1071 when Malcolm III granted free passage at the 'Queens Ferry' for pilgrims on their way to St Andrews.
