Tuesday is my day off. If you want to visit a scrapyard (in case they have anything you need) I will be heading to one then.

The full name of Berkshire should be Royal Berkshire.

Statements like that need substantiating James!! Where's the evidence of such a charter? :-D

Tomorrow's trip entirely in Berkshire will see us departing from Caversham. and heading up river for lunch around Pangbourne - Goring area depending on various factors like wind, lock conditions etc. We are lucky enough to have this boat for the day:

There are seven prominent buildings along the River Thames above Pangbourne Weir. They are known as "The Seven Deadly Sins". One story about them is that the then current Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) used them to house seven lady friends;

Aah, now this could get quite confusing!! That article is headed Berkshire and this thread is supposed to be based on the historic counties pre 1974 as per Neil's original post. So according to that article the letters were written in 1974 which makes it questionable as to the county's title with reference to this thread, so I call upon the thread author to pronounce judgement on this matter!! :-D :-D

Erm, surely Her Majesty The Queen would have the final say? She recognised The Royal County of Berkshire in 1957 (because of the presence of Windsor Castle), and letters patent were issued in 1974.

I certainly can't argue with that and I am sure the adjudicator will take that matter into consideration in coming to his judgement!! :rofl2:

Thanks James, I'll try to remember to have a look for those, we may not reach them due to the lure of The Swan at Pangbourne depending on exactly where they are!! :-D

They are just above The Swan, running alongside the Thames and the A329 (Shooters Hill). If you have time (and are allowed) take a wander through the tunnel linking the platforms at Pangbourne Station. They have recently been decorated, and it made the local news. It will be worth the walk; I am not going to say any more, as I don't want to spoil the enjoyable surprise. Take your camera.

Pedantry isn't my thing, but because we are doing the 92 identified historic counties, and these are tracked by wikishire I try to nudge the coverage to the boundaries identified there. When it comes to Northumberland it will get Newcastle lobbed in with it, and Durham will get Gateshead, South Shields and Sunderland.

I am happy for Royal Berkshire to bask in its Royalness. Selkirkshire and several others are Royal Burgh's being the reason why when the King called, they had to raise an army from the Souters to fight at Flodden.

I was going to go for a pub of the day with a random selection following the pattern Geograph browser, England, Berkshire, public house and either select the first on that came up, or do a proper random choice of the number of images that came up tagged with those "tags".

Berkshire was not a tag used unfortunately but West Berkshire was. So I had to do a bit of faffing about

So in a not that satisfactory selection process, Berkshires pub of the day turns out to be this

The Bull (public house), Streatley

Royal Berkshire is becoming spookier by the minute. The Bull is under consideration for our lunch tomorrow if we make better progress than The Swan at Pangbourne. Mooring at Goring (I'm a poet and I didn't know it! :-D ) will get us close enough for a mini cab or even a walk if the weather is good!!

If you want to enjoy your boat trip (taking in the sights along the way) you probably won't make it to Goring and Streatley. Getting to Pangbourne should not be a problem, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy your meal, have a look around, and get back to Caversham.

If you are going upstream Mick you will have to point your camera to the port side, as the Thames is the border and boundary, with Berkshire. I think the bull is part of the Marstons Pub chain.
