Xantia Non Starter

Post by peter306 »

Xantia 1.8 16valve 2000.
started it this morning, it caught then promptly stopped, will turn over but won't catch.
I've checked the fuel, that's getting through, checked the coil pack, didn't look bad but got a new one on order.
Checked the plugs, they seemed ok but dry though it was a few hours after I turned it over, did turn it over with the plugs out and did see a fine mist come out of the holes, tried it with the MAP sensor disconnected, nothing.
Don't have a Lexia and can't move the car.
I'm in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wilts.
Any ideas greatly welcome
Peter

Changed the coil pack, still not starting, turns over strongly but that's all.
Anyone in the Swindon, Chippenham or Royal Wootton Bassett area with a lexia I would be very grateful if you would pop over and plug it in.
Thanks Peter

Have you got a spark? Does the rev counter flicker when cranking? Does it sound normal when cranking / is the cam belt intact? If the belt is OK, I'd be inclined to stick a new crank sensor in it if they're not too dear.

Are the injectors firing? Any wetness om the plugs immediately after a turn over session?
Does it run on easystart?

RichardW, rev counter doesn't move, how do you check the spark, it's a 4 in 1 coil pack, is it just take them all out and rest the plugs on a metal part of the head, cranking fine, cam belt is fine.

Citroenguy, just turned it over, the plugs are dry.

Hello again, new crank sensor fitted, no change, rev counter not moving, no smell of fuel. turning over nicely. any more thoughts. I reckon either something well hidden or the engine ecu as possibilities

Is the ECU getting crank signal?
Lexia might be able to pull live data

Might be worth checking the fuel pump & fuel rail pressure regulator, as I found that issue recently on a 1.8 16V. It did run but with an extremely weak mixture which meant it ran very hot.
If you check these items by disconnecting the fuel pipes, make sure you have an adequate vessel to catch the fuel.
First check would be to see if you can hear the pump running with the ignition on.

Hello Handyman. Already done that, took the return pipe of just after the valve, nice load of fuel coming through.

Hello again, The crankshaft sensor was the problem, thanks to RichardW for pointing me in the right direction.
Also thanks to citroenguy for posting that video, turns out the new one was a Bosch and was wired the wrong way round.
Car is now running and off to Yorkshire tomorrow.
