Re: Today's County in the spotlight

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Another excellent post Bobins in the never knew that category for me. :-D

Keep saying it but a few more regular chippers-in would be good, but as long as two or three of us can make the effort to keep it going eventually the 92 will all be done and I for one will have a far greater knowledge of the UK, and I enjoy the finding out, and the digging out of 50 year old Golf Scorecards, and digging out old boxes of slides to make my contributions. Satisfying enough.

The scope for Ross-shire is enormous, from one coast of Scotland to the other, and out to a couple of the outer Hebrides as well. Just realised today that this comes within the boundaries of the historic county.

There appears to be no officially recognised flag for Ross-shire at the moment. This is the favoured suggestion as far as I could find:

Having read the flag bit and checked whether Cromartyshire was one of the 92 (it is) I have to acknowledge my faux-pas of including Ullapool in Ross-Shire. Easily done Cromarty is literally on the other side of Scotland, top end of the Black Isle, and exists in historic terms in a number of "enclaves" of small areas in Ross-Shire as well as a goodly chunk north of Ullapool and Ullapool itself.

Yes and rechecking Ullapool isn't on the wiki list of settlements in Ross-shire, but is on the wiki list for Cromartyshire.

No, it's not a particularly militant wing of "dog walker's poo bag" brigade. It is, in fact, a Clootie Well. This one is near Munlochy on The Black Isle.

"Clootie wells (also Cloutie or Cloughtie wells) are places of pilgrimage in Celtic areas. They are wells or springs, almost always with a tree growing beside them, where strips of cloth or rags have been left, usually tied to the branches of the tree as part of a healing ritual. In Scots nomenclature, a "clootie" or "cloot" is a strip of cloth or rag. As-in: “Ne'er cast a clout till May is out,” the old English meaning of the word clout, means cloth or clothing.

When used at the clootie wells in Scotland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man, the pieces of cloth are generally dipped in the water of the holy well and then tied to a branch while a prayer of supplication is said to the spirit of the well.

In Scotland, by the village of Munlochy on the A832, is a clootie well (called in Scottish Gaelic: Tobar Churadain) at an ancient spring dedicated to Saint Curetán, where rags are still hung on the surrounding bushes and trees. Here the well was once thought to have had the power to cure sick children who were left there overnight  #-o The site sometimes needs to be cleared of non-biodegradable materials and rubbish such as electrical items and a venetian blind."

On tour again up in Scotland, but the connection is Elspet Gray, who was born in Inverness.

Well done for keeping the kettle boiling on the thread.
